Day 2 Lollapalooza 2013
Saturday
Day 2 started off with Einstein Bros - what more can you ask for? I can eat Einstein's every day if you let me. But please don't let me. I got a sesame seed bagel with veggie shmear and a coffee cake. Wonderful.
Our first stop was Cherub. Had never heard them before but they were playing pretty early. Definitely worth it. They had me poppin, lockin, and droppin. It was also all the ecstasy (the feeling, not the tablet) from the day before. We were euphoric to even be in Chicago, at Lollapalooza, what we wait for all year, every year.
After Cherub, we made an hour-long line to get our complementary Lolla Bandanas. Some were dry, and some were soaking in iced water for that extra refreshing feels. Good call Lolla.
Next on the list was Ben Howard. Now this was otherworldly. I was surprised yet so glad that Ben had such a huge crowd gathered before him. Although I would've killed to see him at his bare bones, just guitar and cello, the big band worked. The whole thing was cohesive and magical. We also came to conclude that he was a positive physical culmination of all the people we didn't like or that we didn't want to be reminded of. But, we love Ben. Who doesn't love Ben?
hi Ben.
After Ben Howard, we took a break and had lunch. I had a really expensive "mexican bowl" from one of the stands - good stuff if you like all your food swimming in nacho cheese. Anyway, moving forward.
Half our group went to Eric Church after lunch, and I joined the other half to see Ellie Goulding. Another one that is in my top 5. We split a wine bottle and everything from then on was just plain chaos. The crowd was amazing, and so was Ellie. She sounds great live, and has this sort of awkward cutesy "swag," but I'm in love with her. So is everybody else in that crowd. Girl knows how to kick it. I don't know how Eric Church went, but I hear his show was pretty gnarly, especially since he apparently drank several beers at one time. Unfortunately, I missed that, but Ellie is just incomparable.
ELLIEEEEEEEEE *I did not take this picture*
After Ellie Goulding, we reunited again before the Foals stage, before heading out to Blondfire. Blondfire sounded pretty good, but we were otherwise preoccupied. Some people just know how to show their love and aren't scared to share it with the world. And that's such a beautiful thing.
lovers lovers lovers
After Blondfire, we started making our way over to the Mumford and Sons stage. But they weren't going on for a couple of more hours, so we made a quick pit stop at Perry's, for Dada Life.
Now, Dada Life was probably the most fun we've had to date. We were all losing our wits, dancing, jumping, writhing, and had the best time of the whole trip. Our crowd surfing veteran friend then made a compelling argument, and before I knew it, my legs left the ground and my whole body was floating.
People's hands on my back, I was being passed to the front of the stage and I looked back at all the cheering faces, what an exhilarating and surreal feeling. The security guard caught me at the front side, put me down, and I cheered and danced as I ran to the wing. My friend waited for me there, grabbed my hand, and we ran back inside the crowd for some more rock and rolling. Priceless.
crowd surfin mTee.
Straight from Dada Life, we made a bromantic beeline and ran all the way to the Mumford and Sons' stage. We squirmed through people, hurdled over bodies on the ground, jumped and danced our way to where the rest of our friends were waiting. After our reunion, we disbursed again and made our way into the Mumford crowd.
High off of life, drunk off of love, we slowly simmered down as we realized that Mumford's sound system seemed to be a bit off-case. It was too low and unbalanced - we grew bored pretty quickly. Lord, I love Mumford, but even I was ready to belt it out of there. Our aftershow was waiting and we didn't want to be late. We ran for it.
We took a cab, met a nice little Taxi Driver from Africa who told us about the pricing of Taxi Vomit, and we finally made it to The Vic Theater, where the aftershow featured Robert DeLong and Matt & Kim. Just, let that sink in.
We met a couple of interesting folks in that venue, let me tell you. There's nothing worse than confrontational, ridiculous people ruining your vibe when you're in the happiest mood. For some reason, the people in this venue were all kinds of rude and unpleasant. I have seen Matt & Kim 8 times counting this one, and I'd never experienced such an awful crowd for them. They usually have a light-hearted energetic group that is well versed in Matt and Kimnation - but these were some of the snootiest people I've ever seen. Mind you, the times I've seen them has been in Miami, where we are notorious for 'rude and mean' people, but the Chicago crowd took the cake for this one.
Nevertheless, Robert DeLong was quite the pleasant surprise. Mr. Cool. He created all his music on stage and looped it through his system, which was much more entertaining that just watching a DJ live mix on stage. When I mean he created, he CREATED. He had a drumset and a microphone and a keyboard and all kinds of gadgets and it was just a wonderful time. He moved everybody, and we moved him too.
sweet lil dood.
After his awesome set, Matt & Kim came and stole the whole day. They were awesome as usual; an act that I am much more fond of live than in recording. They are so high energy and engaging - interacting with the audience by throwing balloons, confetti, and free merch. Kim did her traditional twerk on the audience gag, and it was brilliant. We were really close to her this time, and we got this shot.
glory.
All in all, this was probably our funnest day - one that will be hard to live up to in the future. But we will try, man and we will succeeeeed.
THINGS I SAW TODAY:
A tattoo that said "Isn't it ironic that we love flowers because they are beautiful?" I love that.
A man in a lucha libre mask who passed out on the ground. His friends just watched him while they sipped their beer. The biggest case of Bystander Effect I've ever seen. Everyone on my side was saying things along the lines of "is that guy okay? Someone should help him. Someone should take off his mask," but no one did anything. Just, something to think about. Eventually, a girl came and took off his mask but left him there. Friendssssssss.
A portapotty stranger came to us with some gossip about Death Grips and why they cancelled their show. Although, I'm still not even clear about what happened there.
Day 3 - Coming soon.
