Black Boy Magic, Betrayal, and a World I Wish I Had Growing Up
“This is dedicated to the seventeen-year-old Black boy who the world told he doesn’t have magic. Lemme let you in on a lil’ secret: you do.”
😭😍. I needed this book when I was younger. And I’m hella juiced that it finally exists now. Blood At The Root gave me everything I didn’t know I was still craving: magic, history, Queerness, Black Southern roots, and unapologetic characters. I loved it!!
It brought me all the way back to my childhood love of Harry Potter; you know, back when we’d run to the bookstore as kids and stay up all night reading. it also grounded me like the movie Black Panther did in adulthood—both the ancestral power and the pain. And this book? It brings both those worlds together in a way that feels hella intentional, and at this time in our world? so necessary. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
The world building? Immersive. I got completely lost in it. The betrayals?? Whew. My heart is still recovering. Wowwwwwwww.
I know some readers might not vibe with the author’s style or the use of slang, but for me? That’s what made it feel real. It felt like my community. Like my cousins. Like me at that age.
If I had this book as a teen, it would’ve been one of my all-time favorites. And even now, it still might be. Right up there with Ace of Spades. I borrowed it from the library, but you already know I’m buying a copy for my overcrowded bookshelf. And I’m hella juiced for the sequel this summer. 😍🔥🫶🏾
