i am over halfway done with the first draft!!! took a bit of a hiatus because of Big Life Changes and i am having to reconstruct my writing routine, so progress is slow right now, but i'm hoping to get back into more of a rhythm with it soon, and then i should be able to estimate a completion date for the full first draft
finch's main issue (apart from like. all the other much more significant issues) is that she's accustomed to being treated as a Symbol rather than as a person, which means that whenever someone approaches her and attempts to speak to her like she's a real human person (hi benceline), she spooks and runs away
the only reason adalric didn't get this treatment when he first asked her about the lute is that he showed zero interest in getting to know finch and was entirely focused on getting himself a lute teacher, which finch could understand, and thus she knew exactly where she stood with him from the start
side effects of my bloodfinch research are that i was watching a movie with my roommate and a character stumbled into an underground room full of neatly organized skulls and i said 'oh an ossuary! ^-^' forgetting that charnel houses are. a) not common knowledge and b) creepy-looking to the unfamiliar
I FINALLY WROTE ALL THE LYRICS I NEED TO WRITE FOR BLOODFINCH!!!! here, have the official, state-sanctioned, 100% true and accurate Official Ballad about the Founding Of Idonea!!!!!! (subject to change. both within the story and with-out the story if i decide to change something)
it's in common hymnal meter, which means you can sing it to the tune of the pokemon theme song, if you want to have the pokemon theme song stuck in your head
The lordship of Idonea
Was once a mortal man.
He walked among his fellows here
And unified the land.
Yet grievéd was this mortal king
For many years ago,
He lost his earthly family
And now he walked alone.
A martyr-soul his brother was,
A king for not an hour,
‘Fore enemies upon him fell
To slay, in search of valor.
Yet unbeknownst, these enemies
Incurred a deadly cost,
For Wilnoth loved his brother-dead
And swift avenged his loss.
(Refrain)
O Wilnoth, through your mighty sword
let all our foes be gone;
make fast your hand upon the yoke
and guide us to the dawn!
A quest to slay the bloodfinch red
The Nameless Saint bestowed,
Its death-song would the king prepare
To take this noble road.
And for a year he wandered far,
While battle tore the land,
But Wilnoth sought to ease the pain
With conquest’s mighty hand.
The bird was meek and beautiful,
Its death-song full of light,
And Wilnoth drank of nectar sweet
And let it make him bright.
He brought each people, one by one,
Into his kingdom’s bower,
And for those who resisted him
He made them know his power.
(Refrain)
When all the land was brought to peace,
His work was not yet done;
For Wilnoth had in mind far more
Than battles to be won.
He thought long on this legacy
And wished for it to last,
And named the land Idonea
To bind its peoples fast.
And long he ruled us, strong and fair,
And kind to all he met,
And when he passed away from us
His earthly subjects wept.
A shining tomb we built for him,
Within his kingdom’s heart,
For Wilnoth is our origin
And we never shall part.
(Refrain)
the warrior-saint is the patron of warriors (duh) but also mathematicians, which means he's ALSO the patron of witchcraft and the occult. god i love making up my own pantheon
judging by lachrimae and bloodfinch i think it's safe to say that my current writing interest is the construction of identity especially when that identity is forcibly blurred by (magical) circumstances beyond your control
hmm ok after much consideration i've decided that in bloodfinch, it has no longer been over a century since their last bloodfinch - it has been over 50 years instead. within living memory, but the people who were alive when the last bloodfinch was killed were very, very young and are now very, very old, so the few (if any) memories they do have are more likely to be akin to 'there were big parties in the streets and everyone was happy and i was allowed to stay up past my bedtime' than 'i remember what color the bloodfinch was wearing at their nineteen-year concert'
since i'm not writing much cultural drift, or much Freaking The Fuck Out over not finding a bloodfinch until finch rolls around, 100 years is simply far too long of a time - despite the crown's best efforts, most people would naturally be regarding it as an antiquated tradition after that long
