Blood Orange & Lemon Bars 🍊 🍋 I adapted this recipe from @smittenkitchen to utilise all the citrus I had languishing on my kitchen counter. The addition of the blood orange juice sweetens the recipe, so I brûléed the sugar topping to give it a little more complexity and ever-so-slight bitterness. I do think I prefer the straight lemon that we’re all used to, but for someone like my husband who can’t handle as much sour, these were perfect. Enjoy the bright flavors of blood orange with these tasty bars that have a crust made of brown butter. Great for citrus fans and people who want to try something new with traditional lemon bars.

Ingredients: 1 cup unsalted butter. 2 cups all-purpose flour. 1/2 cup powdered sugar. 1/4 teaspoon salt. 4 large eggs. 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar. 1/3 cup freshly squeezed blood orange juice. 2 tablespoons blood orange zest. 1/4 cup all-purpose flour. Powdered sugar, for dusting.

Instructions: Preheat oven to 350F 175C. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Continue cooking, stirring frequently, until the butter turns golden brown and has a nutty aroma, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. In a mixing bowl, combine the brown butter, 2 cups flour, powdered sugar, and salt. Press the mixture into the bottom of a greased 9x13-inch baking pan. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until lightly golden. In another mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, granulated sugar, blood orange juice, blood orange zest, and 1/4 cup flour until well combined. Pour the filling over the baked crust and return to the oven. Bake for an additional 20-25 minutes or until the filling is set. Let the bars cool completely in the pan on a wire rack. Once cooled, dust with powdered sugar. Cut into bars and serve. Enjoy!
