If it was one thing Nova hated more than seeing her brother in danger, it was her authority being challenged. Kyllian Hawthorne already challenged her enough as it was. He didn’t necessarily believe in the whole no laws, no rules ideology Nova had set forth for the delinquents -- He was more of the order or bust philosophy which was to be expected. After all, he came from a privileged family on the Ark. Rebellion was good, especially for kids who had been locked up for five years or maybe even half their life. They were so used to the strict orders of the Ark, so used to the fear of being locked up for stealing a book or being at the wrong place at the wrong time, her people needed freedom. They didn’t need rules to bind them, despite what a small handful of the 100 insisted.
Nova stood in her tent, across from Murphy and one of her other lieutenants. They stood in silence for a few moments, trying to process the situation of Kyllian Hawthorne and his way of thinking. It wasn’t like they could banish him. He was the only one who had the skills to be a medic and not only that, he was stupid enough to go after a kid who had a spear pierce his body not even an inch away from his heart. Nova knew the risk of keeping him around. He was against the removal of the metal bracelets from the Ark, tracking their vital signs to see if the ground was survivable or not. If the delinquents kept following the orders Nova gave them, the people on the Ark wouldn’t make their journey to the Ground meaning Nova would be executed for what she did to get down here. Rye needed her -- She couldn’t leave him alone in a place like this and surely, the others wouldn’t be pardoned like Jaha had promised them. That’s how the Ark worked. Corruption.
“I’m not banishing him. We need his skills to survive. He’s a pain in the ass but, I think I can deal with him -- one way or another. And no, we aren’t killing him. It’s bad enough that Jaha’s child is down here. We can’t kill each other for not agreeing with the whole no laws order. If we did, we would be exactly like the Ark. We’re lucky enough that fear of the Grounders inspired everyone to build a wall around camp.” Nova leaned forward, palms pressing down on a large chunk of metal she used as a table when her bed of grass and moss didn’t suffice. “You give the people what you want, they’ll follow you. You keep them safe, they’ll give you their loyalty.”
