What is CSS Protection on DVD Media?

CSS, or Content Scramble System, is a system that is found on most commercial DVDs. This system makes it difficult for a digital copy of the DVD to be played properly, while also preventing the DVD from being played on devices that are noncompliant, such as unlicensed DVD players.
Why is there CSS protection on my DVD if I bought it legally?
Your DVD will have a CSS key, while your licensed DVD player will have a CSS decoder. The CSS is the reason you may have difficulty trying to copy your DVDs to a computer, or burning copies of your DVD even though you legally purchased the DVD.
Without the CSS, DVD video is simply MPEG-2 video that can be easily copied to different devices, so DVD manufacturers began using CSS to stop the illegal sharing of their DVDs. CSS also creates a standard for DVD production that is controlled by the DVD industry.
There are several different keys on any DVD, including the Disc Key, the Title Key and the Player Key. While all of these keys and they way they are encrypted is a secret, there is only a small number of keys available with CSS, around 400 or so. This makes it easier for people to break the CSS and copy DVDs. In other words, the CSS began appearing around 1996, but people have been finding ways to get around them since 1999 or so.
How can I copy a CSS-protected DVD?
A DVD ripper software is needed to copy these DVDs, which is why when you download a movie most of the titles will include “DVD RIP” somewhere in the file name. This enables your your DVD to be copied and playable on a number of different devices.
