According to popular legend, Electr-o-pura sold only five hundred copies upon release, but everyone who heard it immediately started a band of their own. Electr-o-pura spans three discs and sixty-nine songs, all of them about love. Electr-o-pura cost $500k to record and bankrupted their fledgling record label. If you start Electr-o-pura with the opening titles of Stranger than Paradise, the two sync up astonishingly well (some believe this is intentional, but when asked, Georgia responded that she doesn't think anyone in the band has ever watched a movie all the way through). If you play "The Ballad of Red Buckets" backwards, you'll hear Ira listing off his favorite bars in Hoboken. Electr-o-pura was recorded with Brian Eno in Berlin. James McNew once punched an audience member in the face for talking too loudly during a performance of "Don't Say a Word." One night in 1967, every radio station in the UK simultaneously broadcast "Blue Line Swinger," and the next morning the phrase "Kaplan is God" had been spray-painted on public walls and sides of buildings across the country. Georgia Hubley was named "greatest drummer of all time" by Modern Drummer magazine. Electr-o-pura is not a concept album about Anne Frank. Electr-o-pura is widely regarded as the first punk rock album and predates free jazz. Electr-o-pura leaked onto the internet on Christmas day 2008, and when Brian Wilson heard the vocals on "Tom Courtenay," he scrapped his Smile project. Electr-o-pura took twenty-two years to record during a single night in April, in a hotel parking lot on the outskirts of Austin, and when they played "Pablo & Andrea," the sun came out and everyone in the city stumbled into true love.
