The joke landed flatter than intended.

Slowly, Harry let his fingertips drift lower, feeling Louis suck in a tiny breath beneath his hand. It earned him a small, involuntary smile.

“Truth is…” His voice caught. He cleared his throat. “It’s been…quiet in here lately.”

He tapped his own chest before letting his hand fall back to Louis’ chest, already missing the contact.

“Today was the first time in a while that I…felt something other than dread. Like I could let go of everything, you know?”

After a mutual friend's wedding Harry and Louis spend one night together in a hotel room.

Snippet:

The phone starts ringing again and Liam rushes to get it, thrusting it into Louis’ hand with raised eyebrows. “It's Cynthia. You might want to pick up.”

"I don't,” Louis insists, throwing his phone on the cushion beside him, lips pursed.

A key turns in the lock, the front door opening and closing, then Zayn appears, bags of groceries in hand and an unreadable expression on his face. He walks over to Liam who is now in the kitchen, cleaning up the mess Louis made earlier, the both of them whispering to each other and Louis frowns.

“What are you whispering about? You can tell me. I won't break down.” His voice sounds hollow but he doesn’t care. They can’t possibly expect him to act normal right now. Not when he just lost the love of his life.

Zayn turns, getting closer, shoulders hunched. Louis knows that look on his face. It's the look he gets when he has bad news and doesn't know how to deliver them.

“Backstage Banter somehow got tipped off. They already published an article about what happened,” he says, an apologetic look on his face. Louis can’t believe what he just heard.

“What? How?” Eyebrows furrowed, he sits up, almost spilling the vodka.

How could those vultures possibly already know?

They live in a gated community. No paps allowed. It was the middle of the night when they came and got Evan’s body. There is no way paparazzi were at the scene.

Who could have seen?

Zayn is just about to say something, when the phone starts ringing again. This time, Louis picks up.
