A lot of things went wrong in practice. But what I find theoretically interesting about Kisara: She is marginalised either on an ethnic level, or due to some congenital disorder like albinism, within the culture she’s participating in. She is a former slave, or at the very least someone who was at high risk for being enslaved. She also seems to have some kind of fear of her inner power and anger, as manifests through the Blue Eyes. And when Set meets her and ‘saves’ her from the villagers, there’s this kind of question of what his motives are, and whether or not they’re just as exploitative as that of the people he’s saving her from. (It’s hard for me to not read his interest in her being, at least at first, an unholy mixture of ‘she’s hot’ and ‘she has a dragon ka i want to control inside of her’.)
But for some reason these things are hardly ever preserved in modern AUs or reincarnation blueshipping. And I kind of took it for granted that they wouldn’t be but- idk, upon further reflection, why not? It’s not as if ethnic marginalisation, congenital disorders, slavery, female suppression of anger, and Seto potentially being an exploitative asshole aren’t problems that we all must currently deal with in today’s world. And given with that Japan is a relatively popular destination for human trafficking... idk, it seems like it would be pretty fitting to cast Kisara in that type of role instead of, like, transfer student.
I mean, the only real problem I see with it is I’d have to do a bunch of research to cover these topics and themes with even the slightest bit of tact. Which I wouldn’t have to do if I had any interest in writing about school girl Kisara, heh.
What would the ship between Jounouchi, Kaiba and Kisara be called?
Cool ship. I always kind of thought it would be amusing bc I can see Seto being sooooo possessive of this dragon girl almost regardless of whether he personally likes her or not. And in the meantime Kisara and Jou are getting along like a house on fire and he’s so pissed off: Why is Jou here? Why are they getting along? Why does he find Jou attractive? asdfghjkl; Seto being forced to deal with things that are outside of his control remains the most fun.
I don’t think it has a name. I’d probably just call it JouKisaSeto. Even if I liked the ____shipping naming convention, I can’t think of one word that immediately suggests a shared factor or dynamic between the characters. I think JouKisa being called babbleshipping is already kind of scraping the bottom of the barrel. Kisara’s pretty quiet and soft-spoken in manga canon at least. So, yeah, idk.
I’m not super well-read in this area of ygo fandom, so I might be wrong, but my general impression is that most blueship doesn’t focus on what I’d consider to be the most obvious draw to the relationship: that Seto and BEWD Kisara work together great as a team.
(and i’m not saying that lightly considering my favourite Seto ship works together about as well as two bouncing ping pong balls on a collision course)
I mean that Seto consistently - consistently - relies on Blue Eyes to be his trump card and loyal servant and expression of his soul and yadda yadda. And that when Blue Eyes proves to be incapable of defeating an enemy he’s never upset at her for being subpar (as he considers a lot of cards to be) he’s upset at whatever managed to get Blue Eyes in a pinch. And also that Blue Eyes can talk back to him. Like those times she refused to attack. (”Yeah, Seto, I know you want to win this duel against Atem. But this is self-destructive and I’m not playing along. I’m out. Peace.”) And that this is also not ultimately interpreted as a betrayal of the Blue Eyes, but as a cause for reevaluating his own motives. And this is almost because, by-in-large, Blue Eyes usually is very loyal and follows Seto’s directives and trusts in his strategising ability.
I mean, I know a lot of this is through the filter of a card game, but that is some really profoundly good teamwork.
What I’m saying is why is blueship usually interpreted as Kisara being a destined wallflower set to heal Seto’s tortured heart, and not as Kaiba Seto - evil(?) mastermind - and his hyper-competent and put-upon sidekick Kisara. And they go on secret spy missions together, or completely game the corporate world, or are high ranking generals in some fantasy war. And Kaiba does most of the talking so everybody thinks he’s in charge, but every once in a blue moon Kisara’s like ‘that plan’s bad. we’re not doing it.’ And Seto quickly changes course, bc it’s not as if he even has a choice; he can’t actually pull off any of his grand plans without her backing him up.
