Cara DeLevingne Doesn’t Need Your Approval

In an essay on self-love, DeLevingne uses her personal experience to depict the importance of loving yourself, living for yourself, and seeking out what truly makes YOU happy.

Try New Things

DeLevingne wouldn’t have discovered her passion for modeling if she never tried her hand at it, despite being 5’8 and shorter than most girls in the business.

She is learning to open her mind and “embrace new things with a childlike curiosity.” She spends more time doing things she loves, which translates into her creating improved work.

Don’t Give Up

Working hard to be accepted by the fashion industry caused DeLevingne to feel that she needed validation from everyone.

It took a while to gain stability in the business, and after modeling for several years, she knew she had to reevaluate her life goals and redefine what happiness and success meant to her.

Who Am I Doing This For?

Struggling with the constant feeling of disappointing others made DeLevingne realize she was seeking approval as validation. She describes her turning point as the moment where she said to herself, “Wait, what am I trying to do? Who am I doing this for?”

She was proud of her accomplishments, but knew there was more important things than others approval. She wasn’t genuinely happy.

Is This Happiness?

Reflecting on the situation allows her to realize that beating herself up, feeling guilty and regretting the past only holds her back.  “I lost sight of myself and what it meant to be happy, what it meant to be successful.”

She sums up her message in one final statement:  “No matter how many people like you and your work, it doesn’t matter unless you like yourself.”

M.A.C. Gets Caught in Charlotte’s Web

While teasing us last year, the collaboration is finally here – British accessories designer Charlotte Olympia and M.A.C. cosmetics team up to launch an Old-Hollywood-Inspired collection that beauty lovers won’t be able to resist.

The partnership is perfect since both parties are whimsical, chic, and colorful. Aimed at unleashing her inner movie star, Charlotte is excited to release her dream collection and have others join her aesthetic style. She designed the shades and packaging herself, wanting to revive the bygone era and display her own love for makeup.

Coincidentally, Charlotte’s favorite children’s book was Charlotte’s Web, hence the spider-web theme on her logo. She actually claimed her signature to be spider-webs, which you’ll find on all her shoes, bags, and other accessories. The promotional image for M.A.C. also features her wearing a 1940’s-inspired hairstyle and red dress. This makes the line even more personal as well as true to Charlotte’s ideal character and vision.

Some of the collection itself includes: three different red lipsticks to match different skin tones, a deep-brown liquid liner, mascara, three different nail polishes, a travel mirror, and a decorative makeup bag. Therefore, anyone can rock this retro-glam look from anywhere.

Stay tuned next week, for the 21-piece collection will be available online as soon as March 17th and in stores March 24th until early May. You certainly do not want to miss this limited-time collection!

No Always Means No: Amber Rose, Slut Shaming and Consent

When Amber Rose recently sat down with Tyrese Gibson and Rev. Run on their new series “It’s Not You, It’s Men,” Amber had no issue laying their corny quotes and ignorant ideals to rest.

When Tyrese implies that Amber’s fans must feel like they can grope her because of an “energy” she gives off that “creates that response,” Amber shuts that flawed line of insinuation down.

By simply defining the word consent, Amber explains that it doesn’t matter how far along things have gone, or even if she is lying naked in bed with a man, if she says “you know what, NO, I don’t want to do this anymore, I changed my mind,” then no means NO, adding “it doesn’t matter how far I take it, or what I have on, if I say no it means no.”

So if even when she’s naked, no still means no, (duh?) then why is it any different when she has clothes on, and how is her “energy” an invitation for being groped?

When Outfits Speak Louder Than Words

Rev Run then chimes in to spout a quote saying “dress how you want to be addressed” to which Amber boos the crowds applause, further enlightening the Rev that when she is at the club with her girls in a skirt and tank top and she feels sexy and pretty that is not an invitation and does not mean that she is looking for anything sexual. Having confidence in her sexuality isn’t something to be ashamed of and in itself is in no way consent to anything.

Between Tyrese and Rev Runs statements, not only is consent being questioned based on what clothing Amber wears but even by a sexual energy that she is perceived to be giving off. In both cases the meaning of consent is being defined by somebody else’s perception of Amber, rather than allowing her power over her own body to make those decisions for herself.

Despite the general ignorance of their statements, Amber explains to Tyrese and Rev Run that she doesn’t condemn them for it, saying “I’m not mad at y’all, because that’s how society raised all of us.” Amber then admits to being a former slut shamer herself and expresses some ways she has reformed including mention of her SlutWalk.

Amber details the history of the SlutWalk back to the original walk in Toronto in 2011 where it all started. This first walk tells the tale of victim blaming based on clothing choice, as if a woman’s manner of dress is in some way a catalyst for assault.

After giving some background Amber goes on to explain how she faces sexual assault constantly even from her fans who feel it is okay to touch and grope her.  From her personal experiences and conviction to help other girls like her who have been slut shamed, Amber Rose continues to be a strong voice and presence of positivity and encouragement for women everywhere.

Beyonce’s Formation

Beyoncé is taking the world by storm once again. She’s not only recently announced her surprise tour but she released her new video “Formation”. Although the video and Super Bowl performance have seemed to cause some controversy.  Beyonce’s new video is about being proud to be who you are and where you come from. It’s a celebration of heritage and it’s about standing up for what you believe is right. After all African Americans have struggled with in America, this song is a representation of true historical facts. All Beyoncé was doing was singing her new song that displays all of this. Beyoncé isn’t afraid of what people think of her or she wouldn’t have done it. She’s standing up for what she believes is right and she has many people in her corner.

The whole theme of the Super Bowl halftime show was “Believe in love”. Regardless of race, background or sexuality. Beyoncé was just contributing to that. It’s 2016 and it’s time for people to stop being afraid of the truth. Racism still exists. Homophobia still exists. We can’t ignore that and that’s why attention is continually being brought towards it. What’s important is to recognize that there wouldn’t be some much negative feedback if there really wasn’t an issue with equality. Countless celebrities continue to bring racism and inequality to the forefront because it’s still relevant. She’d utilizing her fame as an outcry to one of the many issues that our society is facing today. Before and time and time again, if there are an issue people speak up. So what makes this different than anyone else standing up for what they believe in?

Another main point of “Formation” is the promotion of black appreciation. Not only to non-African Americans but African Americans themselves. In our country there are stereotypical assumptions made to fit all people of color and they are normally consistent with negative connotation. The song helps draw attention that “black shaming” shouldn’t be a thing. Especially amongst blacks themselves. We need to learn to appreciate the things that set us apart. How can we expect America to accept us if we cannot accept ourselves? This song also does not only speak to African Americans but everyone. Be proud of who you are and where you come. Accept others for who they are and where they come from no matter how different they are from you. Although not everyone is ever going to to agree on everything, we need to do the best we can to accept each other to strengthen our society and ourselves. We should aspire to have our children and our children’s children to be brought up in a better society than we were. A society free from judgment and hate.
