In this photographic book—one of very few of Carrion's entire practice—Carrión is critical about his own affiliation with the mail art movement. The book presents a series a photographs of his calling card filing box, which Carrión juxtaposes with witty and poignant captions: “This book of mine is partly real facts and partly fantasy. The real fact is that I love lists of names, card indexes, information retrieval systems, that sort of thing. (the drum) / Ulises Carrión / Available at www.draw-down.com / One of artist Ulises Carrión’s early linguistic exercises in English, originally handwritten in black ink in 1972. The artist fragments the names of musical instruments to express a sound. His attitude to poetry precluded, to a certain extent, his book The new art of making books: “The text of a book in the new art can be a novel as well as a single word, sonnets as well as jokes, love letters as well as weather reports.” A key figure in Mexican conceptual art, #UlisesCarrión (b. 1941, San Andrés Tuxtla, Mexico; d. 1989, Amsterdam) was an artist, editor, curator and art theorist. His visual art practice was founded in an interest in print culture and media, which led him to engage with mail art and eventually performance, film, and video. A Metaphysical Interior by Izet Sheshivari & Luca Lo Pinto “A Metaphysical Interior” is the title of the book that was published on a proposal from Luca Lo Pinto during the exhibition “D’après Giorgio”, which was held at the Fondazione Giorgio e Isa de Chirico from 27th January 2012 to 27th January 2013. The book presents the result of a correspondence protocol suggested by Izet Sheshivari at the curator’s invitation. After receiving and printing the 214 illustrations sent by the artist, Luca Lo Pinto arranged the pictures within the museum space, and documented them in situ. Featuring captions, the book provides “augmented” perspectives from a visit of Giorgio de Chirico’s flat.
