Just a quick little younger Bumi concept doodle, probably about 30ish y/o here.
Although I’m more into f/f ships, Aang/Tenzin & Aang/Bumi ii are pretty cute Aang being a big softy reassuring them every minute and asking if he’s going too hard and them being so done with it “Dad please just go faster”
Bumi ii/Tenzin is definitely more messier and exploratory and just boys being boys
Pregnant Katara waterbending when the movie concept was different.
Badass.

My Kya ii/ Bumi ii/ Tenzin headcannons
Katara and Kya throat singing together
Sokka and Bumi ii showing Tenzin how to do traditional southern water tribe dances
Kya and Bumi ii doing stuff with tenzin one on one (or two on one ig)
Tenzin finds out what happens to the air nomads and it sinks in
The cloud babies dressing up in traditional air nomads and swt clothes when going to fancy events
Tenzin who definitely questioned his sexuality at one point and cried about it
Bumi and Kya experiencing colorism in public (let’s be real it would probably happen at some point)
Multilingual Bumi ii, I feel like he’d pick up on both his parents languages early
Going to family therapy at some point or any therapy really (they NEED it)
Bumi and tenzin going ice dodging with sokka and Aang
Kya and Bumi talking shit about people with each other
Tenzin/ Kya and Bumi realizing who they’re named after and why (that’s a lot to unpack)
The cloud babies and their cousins putting on performances for the adults and the adults loving it
Aang and Bumi throat singing together when they can (bum is the only one who can do it successfully, no shade, it’s a diff style than swt )
Bumi pranking his siblings
Katara having days where she doesn’t talk (ptsd)
The irritating moment when the family gets recognized in public and now everyone wants an autograph
Kya pranking her brothers
Aang having rare bed days where he doesn’t get up the whole day (depression)
Kya and Bumi feeling uncomfortable when someone asks when they’re having kids to populate the airbenders
Bumi the bisexual (istg ts is canon)
Tenzin panicking over the fact that everyone expects him to have children
The cloud babies having anxiety
Tenzin and Aang bending together
Bumi and Katara bonding while cooking
Tenzin definitely using "my mommy is a master water bender and my dads the avatar" to get anything he wants (and it works)
Tenzin who actually likes meat but became vegetarian later
Kya who can sew really well
Aang and Kya having small conversations when aangs around
Bumi and Kya getting traditional swt tattoos (I think I’d be so cool)
Tenzin crashing tf out at some point out of stress (they’ll all do it)
The cloud babies and their cousins getting bailed out of jail for stupid shit
Bumi who can play guitar
The cloud babies getting bullied as childern
Kya and Katara bending together
Tenzin who almost got homeschooled but begged to go to school with his brother and sister (Katara let him)
Katara who definitely cried when her kids achieved something (like bawling from pride)
Bumi and Aang talking about the airbenders
Tenzin who can’t really looks zuko in the eye after learning what happened to the air nomads and feeling awful about it
Bumi and sokka sword training
All the emotions coming out from the cloud babies, guilt, anger, stress and anxiety.
Tenzin wants to be a great air bender but feels like he won’t live up to his dads expectations, is terrified of being the only one like his dad, wants to participate in his mother’s culture more, and is secretly jealous of his siblings freedom and is ashamed that his temperament is more of his mother’s because hes supposed to be in control. To be untethered, to be free. Nearly untouchable.
But he’ll push those things aside and he’ll focus, he’ll get better. He will be a great air bender. He will not let it all die out. Even if that means sacrificing himself over and over again. Even if it means letting the water tribe fade away from him.
He won’t just fulfill his father’s legacy, he’ll secure it.
Kya ii feels guilty, she did not sacrifice anything. She is master Katara’s daughter, yet she is not fearless like her. She is a true free spirit, much like an air nomad. She avoids confrontation when she can.
She accepts her role as a middle child, sometimes a cool mediator for her brother’s complicated relationship. She understands the strain of being a bender and having impossible expectations but she also understands what it’s like to not be quite enough for anyone. She loves her brothers, but she pity’s them for they do not see how similar they are. And sometimes when no one’s around she too feels the sting of jealousy like Bumi does.
If she cannot please anyone, then she will not. She moves through the world lighter than air. And no one can say they saw her, cause who knows her name? It’ll be like she was never there.
Bumi is air. He is light, joyful and energetic. He has a great thirst to prove himself in everything he does. He loves his family very much. He jokes around with his cousins and friends. He tries to guide his younger siblings in a way that makes them feel more at ease.
He is not blind he sees tenzin exactly for what he is. So he doesn’t push he sees the weight of world on his shoulders. It’s a terrible odd feeling being an older brother. To love another so much and yet hate to see what they have. He’s felt it around Kya too. He swallows it. He continues to be that joyful boy who jokes, but as he gets older he feels the bitterness spreading through his body.
It’s probably childish. And he looks at his father and his mother, how hard they work. Who’s he to complain? And he hates a part of himself. The part that desperately wants to ease his parents burdens. If only he were a bender. And he’s angry at his father and solemn with his mother.
He knows the three of them weren’t enough for Aang, she knows it too. Aang loves them. And They are not enough. These two things exist together simultaneously.
Tenzin could be enough, but he’s hanging on by a thread. And No matter how happy they make him, they can’t ever make him as happy as he was when he had them.
I think two things can be true at once. I do think aang loved his kids but I also think he did emotionally hurt them for years. Maybe without meaning to.
I mean they’re struggling with the same argument well into their 50s and 60s. That type of mental and emotional state stays with them.
Tenzin as an adult struggled to separate his own identity with his father’s. He was so desperate to keep his dad’s dream alive that he literally ends up losing himself and what he wants.
Kya says that tenzin is disillusioned with their dad saying that he thinks they had a happy go lucky childhood but they just didn’t.
Bumi acts out, does wild shit and tenzin says he acts like the youngest of them. Maybe the reason he still acts that way is because in past he did stupid shit to get his dads attention, this is just a guess
I believe Katara tried the best she could to correct aang (like she does in the movie) and raise her babies to be confident in themselves without aang as he was busy with tenzin and avatar duties.
I mean obviously they love or at least admire their dad but they’re still desperate for his approval as fully grown adults like maybe their family was dysfunctional. It doesn’t make me less interested in their story.
I don’t think it’s bad characterization to make toph and aang neglectful or uncaring parents. These two literally had a messed up childhood themselves why are people surprised that they’re not amazing parents? That’s not excuse but it’s probably the reason why they’re the way they are.
Honestly in my opinion it gives them more depth.

OG anon here. Just saying it always was a writing choice on the author's part and therefore it would do good to question the author's intentions why things were written (like you said, from the start) as they were.
Even if the kataang kids figured it out by the time they became adults, the lack of Aang's presence still affected them in their formative years, thus serving as individual character background motivation in the sequel series.
Im basically coming out the story and looking at the authors' goals while writing the story. Call it a character study, or a writing study.

All of these "Aang was a neglectful / absent father" posts are made by people who would absolutely resent their father for making them adhere to a strict monk lifestyle when their older siblings had the choice to be Air Acolytes.
It's hilarious how people interpret Aang putting his time and energy into his youngest son when his others would have been 18-16 and 16-14 means he neglected them, as if teenagers need the same kind of attention from parents as a 10-year-old.
Or that Kya and Bumi not being Air Acolytes is a sign of neglect because if Aang really loved his children, their life choices would mirror his entirely with no individuality at all?
Absolutely NO ONE on this website would like that.
Absolutely no one on this website would want their parents to force them to adhere to a traditionalist lifestyle while both of their older siblings got the choice to do whatever they wanted.
Not a single one of you. "Man, I wish that my father decided my life for me from a young age, raised me to follow a strict traditionalist path, belonging to a people who put rigid conformity to a narrow set of behaviors for the sake of peace ahead of individual thoughts and feelings. I would just PITY any child who was raised in an orthodox church but wasn't required to stay."
Hell, It's ridiculous in and of itself that so many of you are acting jealous of Aang's attention on Tenzin when absolutely none of you want to be monk in your own respective religions!!! 99% of the people on this website are laymen. Why are you here on this website, discussing children's cartoons instead of devoting your entire life to your religion and separating yourself from the decadence of society to focus on your spiritual needs? Whatever reason you give, why can't you apply that reason to Kya and Bumi instead of acting as if their choice to be layman is some foreign idea you could never understand.
