Posted @withrepost • @espenras 38 Somali refugees, having just arrived on the beach close to the town of Hosaisha on the coast of Yemen, are crammed into a UNHCR truck. They arrived, scared and exhausted, after a dangerous crossing of the Gulf of Aden. The UNHCR will now transport the refugees to the Ahwar reception centre two hours away. In 2008 over 40,000 Somali refugees arrived in Yemen, bringing the total number close to 250,000. (Text from Transit book, published 2011).⠀ From 2004 to 2011 I documented refugees and displaced people around the world, from Afghanistan and Bangladesh to Colombia and Norway. When Dewi Lewis published my book TRANSIT in 2011, 43,2 million people were on the run all over the world. Today, the number has risen to 68,5 million people (source: NRC).
