San Francisco Day 5 and 6 (3/15-3/16)

Day 5 was March 15th:

March 15th is like a family holiday around here, it’s Chris’ birthday!  We had a lot of fun celebrating Chris’ 27th birthday in San Francisco as I had a few fun stops planned.  My sweetie wore his new Pokémon shirt-I think he’s so handsome!

We took the cable car out for a few breakfast-y stops.  We took silly photos of each other hanging out of the cable car, it looks dangerous but we were actually stopped at an intersection while these were taken!

Our first actual stop was at Batter Bakery, where Chris got to pick out a cookie of his choice (no surprises-he picked the peanut butter chunk).  I also picked out a cookie and we picked up a couple souvenirs as well.

From Batter we walked a couple of blocks to Bob’s Donuts-came here on a recommendation from a friend and it was so worth it!  Bob’s is open 24/7, which is amazing!  Anytime you want a donut, you can have one.  Growing up, we had a birthday donut tradition where you got to pick out a special donut and before school Mom & Dad sang happy birthday and you got to blow our your birthday candle!  I love this tradition and we try to keep it alive as much as possible.  So a birthday donut stop was a must.  

We devoured the donuts on the way to the cable car stop. Unfortunately the cable car never came (California Line) so we ended up walking to a bus stop a few blocks away and catching a bus back to the hotel.  We unloaded the sweets we didn’t eat and headed toward to conference center to hang out and have lunch.

For lunch we ended up at Super Duper Burger, which was a recommendation from one of our local Worcester friends via Twitter.  These were the second burgers we had so far, but hands down, these were the best burgers we had all trip (there are more burgers in future posts!).  We also got an Oreo Milkshake to split-very tasty!

Part of the point of coming to San Francisco was for Chris to do some networking at GDC.  We thought that a good way to meet people was to offer them food!  Since it was Chris’ birthday, we bought some cupcakes at Cako and hung out in the Metreon for a few hours.  If you stopped by and said hi, we gave you a free cupcake!  In theory, this was a great idea.  In practice, we were left with a lot of leftover cupcakes which we ate throughout the remainder of the trip.

Tuesday night was also the night I was allowed to go to some parties!  Typically these parties are for devs only or invite only, but the ones we had planned for Tuesday were either bring a +1 or open to the public.  We first stopped at the Amazon/Twitch party at the Southside Spirit House where we knew absolutely no one, but the food was great!  We ended up eating a bit, getting a swag bag, and heading on to the next event, which was the Indie Olympics.

The Indie Olympics was held in the Folsom Street Foundry and was open to the public.  We were able to get in for free because we pre-registered but those just getting in at the door paid $10.  Steal! :)  Chris had plans to attend another party (some Xbox mixer, I think) but decided the Indie Olympics were too fun to leave.  We spent a lot of time here, watched many people play many games, and played some Rock Band.  I honestly don’t remember what time we left but it was late and I was exhausted.  We took the bus back to the hotel and passed out.

Day 6 was March 16th:

Our first stop on the 16th was the Coit Tower.  We took MUNI to the closest stop and walked the rest of the way, which was essentially straight uphill.

All the hills were worth it though, as the 360° views of the city from the top of the tower were beautiful.  We were lucky enough to be at the top of the tower on a mostly sunny and warm day, so we could see whatever we wanted.  A few of our best shots are below.

We headed toward the Metreon to get lunch at the weekly food trucks that come to 5th and Minna, just a few (flat!) blocks away from the conference center.  There were 6 trucks on this particular day, but Chris and I came to a quick agreement that we both wanted food from Bacon Bacon.  It was delicious!

While Chris did some networking and went to a handful of parties and events, I spent my time being my foodie self, first by wandering the Ferry Building doing some food shopping and some food eating.  I highly recommend the caramel coconut sorbet from Humphry Slocombe!

I walked from Pier 1 (Ferry Building) to Pier 43 to visit the Boudin bakery and museum.  I probably spent a good two hours in this building on the self guided tour and in the bakery shop.  There’s absolutely nothing I love more than cooking and baking!

I wandered to the cable car stop near Ghirardelli Square and waited in an obnoxiously long line to ride the cable car back to Union Square.

I stopped by the grocery in the mall to grab a few things to go with my sourdough turtle for dinner and hung out at the hotel until Chris arrived back from all of his events.  It was nice to have a quiet night in after all the walking I did that afternoon!

Bob's Donuts San Francisco - When you need the Big Donut

Bob's Donuts on Polk Street is a local institution in San Francisco for several reasons

It is open 24 hours a day in a location that has many bars, clubs and residences, a ready customer base especially on late nights.

It bakes fresh donuts continuously day and night and has a Twitter feed http://www.twitter.com/whatsfreshest  which tells you what donuts are fresh out of the fryer.

It has donuts the size of travel pillows called the Big Donut.  If you can finish it on site within 10 minutes, you get a free T-Shirt.  Look at the photo and check out the size in comparision to the donut holes and the regular donut on back left.

If you are in the neighborhood, you will find lines out the door when the donuts are fresh (driven by the Twitter feed)

It was my birthday yesterday and besides eating a lot, I came to work today and was showered with more food. Hence, this giant donut from Bob's on Polk st. It's legendary and it's delicious. Not recommended for one person, however if you can finish it yourself, you're my hero. Also: they're open 24 hours. If you need a fix, this is the spot!!!
