297. Raggedy Ann and Andy: A Musical Adventure (1977)
5/10
If I could rename this movie, I would call it Raggedy Ann and Andy Promote Gender Roles and Heteronormativity. In the first twenty minutes it expects me to somehow appreciate a "male" toy wanting to belong to a boy child, rather than a girl. According to him, this is because little girls don't wrestle or climb trees or whatever (do you think the writers ever met a little girl, or do you think they just postulated based on rumors?)
Perhaps this bothered me because I never had a Raggedy Ann or Andy doll, and have never actually seen one in person. Maybe when you own a Raggedy Andy as a child, the truly masculine nature of owning a doll with shorter strands of yarn for hair really promotes – I don't know where I was going with that, it's an inanimate fucking object, it doesn't have a gender. I guess a boy wanting to belong to another boy is actually sort of homonormative, when you think about it. There's certainly some Freudian shit going on here. The animation is well-produced, if a little eccentric at times, but the songs are bad, and, of course, I always feel rattled by an unexpected visit from the gender police.

Oh, the Joy of Cooking!
Hooray for you,
babe of mine -
you finally
hooked your guy -
got your self
a
picket fence,
and a robin’s
egg blue sky!
But wait a liddle
minute -
You’re now
in charge of food!
Cooking three
square meals a day -
you better make
‘em good!
Oh, what to do,
you ask,
Clueless bride you are,
when
Along comes
Joy of Cooking,
and now you are a star!
For starters,
You can boil
some …
