Dec. 1, 2002: The Ravens, having scored one touchdown in their past 30 possessions, rally to beat the lowly Bengals, 27-23, in Cincinnati. Baltimore’s Chad Williams returns an interception 98 yards for a touchdown, tying a team record.
Dec. 4, 1999: Navy defeats Army, 19-9, at Philadelphia’s Veterans Stadium in the 100th football meeting between the schools. Quarterback Brian Madden rushes for 177 yards and defensive end Gino Marchetti (believed to be no relation to the Colts Hall of Famer) recovers two fumbles.
Dec. 1, 1980: Paul Kinney, a highly recruited 6-foot-5 basketball star at Calvert Hall, dies after suffering a heart attack during a scrimmage at Parkville High. His death galvanizes the Cardinals, who go on to win the Baltimore Catholic League, then defeat Dunbar in a showdown between city powers.
Dec. 4, 1971: Tom McMillen, a 6-11 sophomore, scores 35 points as Maryland’s basketball team defeats George Washington, 117-96. It’s a single-game team scoring record for the Terps (2-0), ranked No. 6 in the country under third-year coach Lefty Driesell.
Nov. 29, 1967: The Orioles trade shortstop Luis Aparicio and outfielder Russ Snyder, mainstays in their 1966 championship season, to the Chicago White Sox. In return, Baltimore gets infielder-outfielder Don Buford, a key player in three American League pennants (1969-1971), and pitchers Bruce Howard and Roger Nelson, both of whom will be gone in a year.
Dec. 3, 1952: The NFL awards a franchise to Baltimore, providing that the city sells 15,000 season tickets by Jan. 22. The club will inherit players from the Dallas Texans, a bankrupt team that was taken over by the league this season.
Dec. 3, 1947: Buddy Jeannette scores 15 points as the Bullets win their ninth straight, 73-58 over the host Philadelphia Warriors in a Basketball Association of America game. Baltimore (9-1) hits on only 28 of 84 shots from the field, but Philly does worse (19-for-112).
Dec. 1, 1934: Navy breaks a 13-year football jinx against Army with a 3-0 victory in the mud before 80,000 at Philadelphia’s Franklin Field. A 28-yard field goal by Slade Cutter wins it for the Midshipmen, who manage three first downs to Army’s two.
Dec. 3, 1937: Bobby Boyd, Colts defensive back who had 57 interceptions in a nine-year career (1960-1968). He made the All-Pro first team three times.
