Jean-Pierre Melville - Bob Le Flambeur (1955) A french noir heist movie which feels at the same time like an adaptation of American Noirs but also distinctly French. The Frenchness of the film goes beyond language and setting, in fact the direction is what points us the most toward it as well as the risqué qualities of the script and what's shown on screen. Melville is here very much pointing towards what will be the Nouvelle Vague of French cinema. From some of the cuts to the characters, reprehensible scum for the most part, the casual misogyny which will be such a hallmark of Godard and the nihilistic perspective devoid of any moralization of the story itself. The story is that of a gambler, the titular Bob, who goes bankrupt and plans to do one last heist. So, in a fashion that we are now used to from later heist movies, he goes to find the right team for the job. This was a clear influence on Oceans 11 both the old and new versions of it, but in Oceans characters are a lot more likeable and the ending is much happier. Still, Bob wins in the end, even while betraying all that surround him and killing his best friend because he got distracted at the gambling table... I told you it was nihilistic.
