Salve actually is the imperative singular of the verb, salvo. Technically translating it's a command saying "be healthy", but it means hello. It's also where the term salutatorian comes from, because they have one of the first speeches at a graduation. And the valedictorian says goodbye. Vale comes from the verb valo, which means the same thing technically as salvo, but it's used as goodbye.
