So it’s hard to believe considering the 60-degree weather we are having today, but a week ago today we still had snow on the ground! We boiled down about 100+ gallons of late season sap with hopes of making our first batch of Grade B Maple Syrup. When we shut down Saturday we had about 7 gallons of Sweet almost syrup that we would take to syrup the following day.

We can see the light at the end of the tunnel. This is despite the fact that we just got another 32 gallons of sap tonight to add to our supply currently buried in the snow. If we get 11 more gallons of sap, which would bring us to 540 gallons of sap collected, between tonight & this weekend we will have collected three times as much sap using the new Shurflo Pump set-up than last year!

More Bottling We continued bottling tonight and brought our very first batch of sap we made in our first weekend boil to syrup.

Not much to report today but we did bottle up our first batch of syrup this season tonight. Ironically this is from sap that we boiled this past weekend, because we have no more cold storage — the fridge was full and the freezer is full of syrup or almost syrup and with the weather warming we needed to bottle a batch. Well 16 mostly full buckets is how I started our first boil today. I say mostly full because 5 gallons is almost at the very top. I tend to keep them just below the outside lip which puts them in the neighborhood of 4 gallons. So 64 gallons of sap that needs to be reduced to around 8 gallons or so of sweet.
