1960. Ambriose Boimbo, a young Congolese man is photographed stealing the King of Belgium’s ceremonial sword on the eve of the independence of the Belgian Congo. The photograph depicts the king and the newly elected President of the Independent Congo waving to citizens — seemingly unaware of the incident. This photo became a symbol of the start of the end of European colonization within Africa.
