Because he just posted it, I figured I should too… @the_caffeinated_pianist and I performed Bolcom’s George, a piece about George, who preferred to be called Georgia. George was stabbed by a stranger for his gender preferences. This piece was written during the height of the AIDS epidemic in America. This costume change, where Bolcom calls for the singer to “portray George silently” is intended to honor George through a transition from a typically masculine suit and tie to a sparkly, feminine top. Though you can’t see it very well, there’s also a great necklace!
