justin was a tough guy to surprise.
he wasn’t nosy, but he always seemed to know when something was up. that made it even more impressive to y/n that he hadn’t caught on to what she’d been planning for the past few weeks. his birthday was coming up, and while he was never one for big celebrations—just a simple dinner with her and his family—y/n loved throwing parties. so this year, she decided it was time to surprise him.
she’d spent weeks making arrangements, making sure justin wouldn’t see it coming. some of his teammates had agreed to fly in from los angeles to oregon, and she’d even reached out to a few of his old college friends. his brothers were in on the plan, tasked with taking him out for the day—where didn’t really matter, as long as he was out of the house long enough for her to set up.
that morning, she quietly made her way downstairs and opened the front door for justin’s parents and brothers, who had arrived to help set up for breakfast. it had become something of a tradition—one that started when she and justin first began dating. that year, she wanted to impress his family, so she invited them over for breakfast to celebrate his birthday. she tried to cook everything herself, but justin had woken up and insisted on helping. in the end, he made his own birthday breakfast for everyone, though he never took any credit. that was the day she truly won over his mom. since then, it had become their tradition—except now, she didn’t cook. instead, his family brought food from a local restaurant they all loved.
she greeted everyone and helped put up small decorations. once everything was set, she headed upstairs to wake justin. when she walked into the room, he was lying on his side, cuddling nova. carefully, she lifted the covers and slid into bed next to him, pressing soft kisses along his neck and shoulders, running her nails lightly down his back. he stirred slightly, releasing nova, who immediately ran downstairs to greet the family.
justin shifted, turning toward her and nuzzling into her neck.
“happy birthday, sweets. i have breakfast and a surprise for you downstairs,” she whispered, her fingers threading through his hair.
“five more minutes,” he mumbled.
“the food is getting cold, babe.”
he sighed, pressed a soft kiss to her lips, and rolled out of bed.
“i’d put a shirt on,” she said with a small grin.
“what? why?”
“uh, you don’t want to scare the surprise.”
he raised a brow but didn’t argue, pulling on a t-shirt before heading downstairs.
as soon as he reached the bottom step, there was shuffling, followed by a loud—
“surprise!”
she followed behind, smiling as justin was greeted with hugs and laughter. his brothers plopped a ridiculous birthday crown on his head and started snapping photos. everyone gathered around the table, enjoying breakfast while sharing their favorite stories about justin. with each memory, his face got redder, and y/n couldn’t help but giggle at how flustered he was.
after breakfast, she began tidying up while holly joined her in the kitchen to help.
“need any more help with tonight?” holly asked, drying dishes.
“i don’t think so. everything’s pretty much set—just need to decorate, but you already helped with that, so don’t worry,” y/n smiled.
“are you sure? i was planning to come an hour early and help set up. i’m not going with the guys—they’re going fishing.”
“oh, well, in that case… maybe we could do something before? like, get our nails done or stop by that new coffee shop you mentioned?”
“i would love that,” holly beamed. “it’ll be fun.”
“love what?” justin asked as he stepped into the kitchen.
“planning a girls’ day,” y/n replied casually.
“for today?” he asked.
“yeah, we’re going fishing, man,” patrick cut in.
“and you two aren’t coming?” justin asked, looking between his mom and girlfriend.
“no, honey. you know how i get—the rocking, the smell. no way,” holly said, waving him off.
“same. not feeling it today,” y/n added. “but you go, have fun. we’ll be around.”
-
“okay, but i was kind of hoping to just spend the day at home with you,” justin admitted when they were back upstairs, brushing his teeth. “twenty-seven isn’t a big birthday.”
“well, there’s always next year,” she said, pulling her sweatshirt over her head.
a car horn honked outside, signaling it was time to go. they shared a quick kiss before justin jogged downstairs, and she finished getting ready.
-
“so what’s the plan, sweetheart?” holly asked later as they walked through the mall with coffee in hand.
“well… i haven’t gotten him a real gift yet, so maybe after nails, we can shop a bit.”
“any ideas?”
“no clue. maybe a nice golf shirt or something.”
they continued walking, but y/n felt unusually anxious—her stomach turning every five minutes. she figured it was just nerves.
“do you see yourself marrying him?” holly asked suddenly.
“of course i do. and im not just saying that because you’re his mom. i really see the rest of my life with justin. he makes me excited for the future.”
“i hope it happens soon. i don’t think i’ve ever seen him this happy.”
y/n smiled, but then quickly frowned as they walked by a man wearing strong cologne. her stomach turned again.
“i’m gonna run to the bathroom real quick,” she said, rushing off.
-
“you okay, sweetheart?” holly asked when she entered.
“i’m fine. probably just nerves,” y/n said, flushing the toilet and getting up.
“we should head back before the boys get home.”
“good idea.”
-
back at the house, people started arriving, and y/n’s nerves kicked up again. she left holly to handle the rest while she got dressed. halfway through applying mascara, she got a text from justin:
Hey we’re on our way home :)
“shit,” she whispered, checking his location—five minutes away.
she ran downstairs. “everyone outside! he’s almost here!”
she fixed her hair and smoothed her dress just as the front door opened. justin walked in blindfolded, guided by his dad and brothers who were laughing behind him.
y/n stepped forward and grabbed his hands. “hey, sweets.”
justin took a breath, relaxing the moment he touched her.
“what’s happening?” he laughed.
she led him into the backyard and nodded to everyone. they got into position, and she quickly reached up on her toes to remove the blindfold.
“surprise!”
justin smiled wide, pulling y/n into a hug. she giggled, but the smell of fish hit her, and she gently patted his shoulder before excusing herself upstairs—her stomach turning again.
she thought she was being subtle, but she heard footsteps behind her and a knock on the bathroom door.
“hey… you okay?” justin asked.
“yeah, i’m good, just, uh…”
“can i come in?”
“yeah.”
she flushed the toilet and quickly washed her hands.
“i’m gonna shower real quick,” justin said, starting to undress.
“you do that,” she nodded, slipping out with an awkward thumbs up.
pulling out her phone, she quickly texted her best friend, asking her to make a stop before heading to the party. then she hurried downstairs, trying not to look too suspicious.
justin didn’t take more than fifteen minutes to come back down—hair still damp, wearing khaki shorts and a navy blue nike sweatshirt. he made his way through the party, smiling at y/n every chance he got.
y/n stood near the front door, waiting anxiously for her friend’s arrival with her “emergency pickup.”
“so how was your day with my mom?” patrick asked, grabbing a drink from the fridge.
“went great, actually. we’re best friends now. how was your day on the boat?”
“it was fine. we caught a couple, let them go. my brother wouldn’t stop talking about you.”
“really? only good things, i hope.”
“nah, the worst,” patrick replied with a smirk, clearly joking.
“gosh, guess i gotta end things then,” she teased, just as the front door nudged open.
y/n excused herself and rushed to greet her friend, natalie. “thank god you’re here. the wait was freaking killing me,” she whispered, already heading for the stairs.
-
“do you really think you’re pregnant?” natalie asked, opening one of the boxes as y/n chugged the last of her water bottle.
“it’s not not a possibility. i mean, i’m on birth control, but… i haven’t exactly been the best at taking it on time.”
“are you scared? i mean… have you two even talked about kids?”
“we have. we want three. we just never said when, exactly.”
“well, in nine months, you’d be down one with two to go.”
“i can do math, nat. thanks,” y/n muttered, grabbing the tests from her hand. “sorry. i’m just nervous.”
“yeah, yeah. i’ll let it slide.”
they set their timers and stood in silence, the muffled sounds of people talking and music playing downstairs barely registering in y/n’s mind. her heart pounded. she knew justin would never leave her—but were they really ready for this? he probably was. everything about him screamed “dad material.” but her? a baby was forever. was she ready for forever?
“you look,” she said, covering her eyes and turning away from the counter as the alarm went off.
natalie grabbed the tests and let out a soft gasp.
“deadass?” y/n asked, not daring to turn around.
“deadass,” natalie nodded, holding up all three positive tests.
“holy fuck—” they both froze at the sound of the bedroom door opening. in a panic, they scrambled to hide the evidence, just as justin walked in.
“hey, natalie! didn’t know you were here already,” he smiled, going in for a hug. natalie awkwardly passed the tests back to y/n behind her back.
“yeah, sorry—ran a little late. happy birthday!”
“thanks!” he looked between the two of them, suspicious. “so… what’s going on in here?”
natalie shot y/n a nervous glance. y/n gave a small nod, signaling for her to go. natalie awkwardly squeezed past them and slipped out of the room.
justin opened his mouth to speak, but y/n cut him off.
“i’m about to drop a completely insane bomb on you. i need you to brace yourself, okay?”
he blinked but nodded.
y/n took a deep breath and handed him the three pregnancy tests. silence fell over the room.
she didn’t look at him right away, but when she finally did, his expression was unreadable. serious, yes—but not upset. just… stunned.
“surprise?” she said weakly.
he looked at the tests again, then back at her, before breaking into the biggest smile and lifting her off the ground in one smooth motion.
“are you serious? you’re pregnant?”
“yeah… i mean, i took the tests, but i should probably go to the doctor to confirm.”
“we’ll go first thing in the morning. holy shit. you’re pregnant.”
“i guess i am,” she laughed softly, wrapping her arms around him.
-
they agreed to keep the news to themselves until they saw a doctor, but the excitement between them was undeniable. maybe it wasn’t the most traditional timing, but they didn’t care. they were about to step into something huge—something permanent—and they couldn’t wait to do it together.
