has anyone ever actually had their bones feel uncomfy? if so, i’d love to hear the stories. mine was when i was learning about bone worms in marine biology class. my bones itched.

Discovering Bone-eating Worms in the Deep Sea

When MBARI Scientist Bob Vrijenhoek set out on a research cruise in search of clams in 2002, he did not expect to discover a new genus of bone-eating worms. The discovery has sparked the curiosity of researchers at MBARI and elsewhere and, in over a decade, has prompted many questions and more than 30 new species worldwide!⠀ This photo shows Osedax frankpressi, the red feathery organisms imbedded on and feeding off a whale carcass. Although they lack a mouth and gut, these unusual worms make a living on dead whales by producing a “root system” that digests the surrounding bone and releases collagen and lipids to consume.
