The Moka is an iconic Italian coffee pot originally made by Bialetti. The ‘Little man with a moustache’ is a caricature of the founder Alfonso Bialetti. It became a familiar cartoon figure after the Carosello; a 10-minute spot of advertising broadcast every night on Italian national television immediately after the evening news. And so it became normal practice in Italian households to say: ‘dopo Carosello, tutti a nanna’ (all the kids to bed after Carosello). The Italian architect Aldo Rossi, designer of the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht, was fascinated by bizarre shapes, for example coffeepots. He drew over-sized coffeepots with brick walls as if you could walk inside them.
So, could the tower of the Bonnefantenmuseum be an imaginary coffeepot?
