I’m super frustrated with people’s reactions over skeletons right now (not because of their “morals” but because of how they are defining these morals)
1. “It was a stolen little Asian girl and her soul is rotting” I’m a first generation Asian American. My mom worked in sweat shops so I can be here and do the things I do. Based on where the skeleton is likely from (if it is Asian no real proof) then the girl was likely someone who believed in reincarnation. Just based on my own knowledge of my own culture. Stop enforcing your morals on my culture I really don't appreciate it. Also from my knowledge of bones its not a child (personal opinion from my experience with university natural history collections).
2. “She is a bone thief” Nothing about this is stolen. Stop.
3. “Legality =/= morality” Correct. This statement is correct but you using it to try and prove your point on this I do not see eye to eye with. We’re in a world were human remains are legal to own for numerous reasons. So lets look at it this way, no matter what this skeleton has been articulated and brought into the world of collection. from this there are three options (1) Go to a university collections or (2) go to a personal collection or (3) they travel with whoever sold them to that girl. There is no rouge burying of human remains in your backyard and I think being in any sort of collection is better than the last option.
4. They aren’t respecting the remains. Maybe the selfie was distasteful but no one can assume anything. I have seen some pretty disrespected collections in other universities due to things like lack of space/funding.
I understand that human remains come with a lot of emotional unpacking but based on what’s already been done in this skeletons past there are few good options and that should be noted.
