Go on a Walk With the Real-Life Master Roshi and His Giant Tortoise Friend, No Dragon Balls in Sight
If you thought the picture of the elderly man walking around with a giant turtle looked strangely familiar, you’re not alone. Give the man some sunglasses and beard, and he could be mistaken for Master Roshi’s long-lost twin brother from Dragon Ball. Alas, this man is not skilled in the kamehameha, but is special for… Read more…

Surprised, humbled, moved, and immensely grateful to Rev. Ishii, his wife Ikuko, and the (@waipahu_taiyoji) taiko troupe and the wider temple community for paying such loving tribute to @mrshawaii at tonight's bon dance. I knew that there would be a few words said, but to have a ceremonial blessing — for her, and other beloved members of the temple family — with incense and flowers and chanting was amazing. The troupe even performed around her in what was their first public performance since we were in the mix in 2019. And they were very impressive! I definitely missed drumming. The temple was also celebrating its brand new yagura, built just this summer by complete but generous strangers from Molokai. It's a deluxe edition, with custom steel ladder, LED lighting, and an electric hoist to safely raise large drums and other equipment to the top. Jen would sometimes lament that she had no rich culture, or close community, and in the end felt she'd even lost her family. But she found all of those things in Hawaii, with us and the Ozawa ’ohana. She would have been so touched by the public embrace for her, a girl from Florida, on this hot summer night in the former sugar plantation town in Waipahu. #obon #bondance #bonfestival #hawaiibondance #bondancehawaii #waipahu #waipahutaiyoji #sotozen #honolulu #oahu #hawaii #latewife #cancersucks #fuckcancer (at Waipahu Soto Zen Temple Taiyoji 曹洞宗 松嶽山 大陽寺) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cg6Mp0wOXGl/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
