When We’re Alone
Sunlight shimmered through the shades of Ryuji’s window. It was rare for Ryuji ‘Bon’ Suguro to stay in bed this early in the morning. Usually he would be awake by 5:30, working religiously to his morning routine. But today wasn’t an ordinary day.
His hair was still down around his face from sleeping peacefully. While all he had on were a black shirt and his matching boxers. His focus wasn’t on his hatred of Satan, the number of scriptures he still needed to memorize, school, daily activities, the many girls who had asked him out, Rin, Shima, Konekomaru, Shiemi, his temple, family or the various other things that would usually take up his mind. His only focus was on what was wrapped inside his arms.
Izumo Kamiki lied there beside him. Her hair undone from her normal two tails, cascading down her slender back dressed in one of Ryuji’s many school shirts. Her head rested soundly over his chest. Her serene state was that of an angel to him.
Bon slightly smiled. He knew he was blessed to have Izumo as his girlfriend. The girl to most was overbearing, cold, and just plan mean. She never let her guard down with anyone, except him. It was because of a mission they had almost a year ago that she finally showed her true colors to him.
When she finally showed her true self, all the weakness she had bottle up, he managed to do something he never thought he would do for her. He swore to protect her from all of it. Every horrible thing she felt from her past and sealed that pledge with a kiss.
They were both the most determine students in their exorcist class so they weren’t the type to go around lovey-dovey. In fact they hadn’t told any of their friends about their involvement. In front of them they acted like they always did, except with a little more hate. They had to focus during the day and certainly didn’t want all their friends to gush over them as a couple.
Ryuji rolled his hand up, placing it on top of Izumo’s head. Izumo slowly started to open her red eyes. Her eyes shut again before they fully opened with her vision clear. She looked up to be welcomed by her boyfriend’s smiling face.
“Good morning, sleepyhead,” Ryuji said sweetly.
Izumo smirked. “What? Did I ruin your morning routine again?”
Ryuji chuckled. “You sure did. Guess I should be glad Konekomaru spend the night over in Shima’s room or he be wondering why I’m not already dress, studying the bible.”
“Well, if you that bother why didn’t you just tell me to leave?” Izumo sat up with her hair falling all around her.
Ryuji brought himself up. “I never said that. If I didn’t want you around I would just say so.”
Izumo took Ryuji’s cheek in her hand. She planted her lips on top of his. Izumo other hand wrapped into the young monk’s shirt to bring him closer. Their eyes descended shut while they enjoyed the moment.
Izumo broke the kiss and faced forward. She wrapped her arms around her legs. “You really need to learn when someone’s joking, Suguro.”
“Hmm?” Ryuji swept her off the bed and then dropped her flat on top of it. Izumo shirked. Ryuji got on top of her with his arms down on either side of her. He stared straight down into her eyes. “I thought I told you to call me Ryuji when we’re alone.”
“What are you going to do, beat me up?” she teased.
“Don’t tempt me, Izumo. We’re save that for school.” He lowered himself down and kissed on her the lips.
Izumo pushed up on Ryuji’s chest, knocking him over on his back as she got on top of him. “Tempting is what I do? Did you forget I’m a witch?”
“Not at all,” Ryuji responded. Ryuji stopped the back and forth with Izumo to think. He then sat up, having the purple hair girl in his lap. “We need to get dress for school or we’ll be late.”
“Can’t have that.” Izumo pushed Ryuji back down. She swung her feet around to step off the bed. She headed toward the door, tossing her hair back over shoulders. “Be a good boy and let me get a head start.”
Ryuji huffed. Time to start fighting.
Forgotten Prayers
Ryuji and Izumo slept soundly in their bed.
Sunlight peaked between the blinds. The twinkles of yellow light hit Ryuji’s closed eyes; Ryuji’s eyelids shut more before they released. His eyes blinked a couple of times so he could retain his vision. He quickly noticed something gently wrapped around his body and it wasn’t the blanket.
Ryuji looked over to see a comforted Izumo at his side with her arm wrapped around his chest. He smiled slightly. It was the first time in what seemed like centuries that he seen something other than sorrow and failure written on her face.
Still there was a hole in his heart which was far from being filled. He needed to go to the main temple for his daily prayers. It was one of few things he could find some serenity in these days. He careful placed Izumo’s hand down on the bed.
His feet dropped to the ground, sitting up on the edge of the bed. He stood up to take his first step toward the door. The floor cricked.
Izumo’s eyes partly opened like red half moons, searching for light to polish them. It only took her a moment to slowly gather herself. Her long grape color hair fell all around her. She gazed up to face Ryuji’s back.
“Ryuji,” she said in a daze. She wiped the sleep from one eye. “Where are you going?”
Ryuji gazed back at his love. “To the temple,” he started. He hoped Izumo would have slept for a few more hours. Just enough time to give him more time to finish some things. “I have to take care of a few things.”
Izumo lowered her head down, hiding her eyes in the shadows of her bangs. “Do you have to go today?”
“Yeah,” he barely spoke. Ryuji turned back around and took another step when he felt Izumo grab his right arm on the back swing. “Hmm.” He looked back at her again. “Izumo, I need to go.”
A single tear ran down the woman’s face. The solitary droplet fell on their blanket. “Please…don’t leave me here alone.”
“Izumo.” Her hand trembled against his solid arm. Ryuji turned to face her. He understood his wife’s sadden demeanor as of the past three weeks. They were so excited about having their first child when Izumo had had a miscarriage just four months in. It sunk the hearts of all of their friends, but even more them.
Though Ryuji was tough he couldn’t help crying like a lost infant the entire night it happened. Izumo couldn’t get out of bed. She didn’t want to eat anything the monks or priest brought her. It took Ryuji everything he had to convince her to take the tiniest bites.
Izumo lifted her head. Her eyes filled with tears and her lips sucked in. “I can’t…” Her head lowered again. “I can’t be alone right now…Ryuji.”
Ryuji narrowed his eyes slightly in his own grief. He really wanted to pray, ask for guidance and for knowledge on what to do. He needed to mediate; recite the words of Buddha that the word is filled with suffering and that happiness didn’t last forever, that the world itself would caused one’s suffering.
He needed to do all these things. They were important not just for him now being the Head Monk of the temple, but his being as a person. He didn’t want to feel anything. That this was just another part of life and that their precious child would be reborn to a couple that would love it as much as they would have. Their child would have been good he knew that much. She or he was growing inside of Izumo after all. Sure she was difficult in her teenage years, but that all changed once they married five years ago.
He also wanted to get away from Izumo. He didn’t want to see her tears anymore or hold her weakened trembling body. He didn’t want to hear her blame herself for the lost they both shared. He couldn’t stand the sight of her starving herself. All of this was too much for even him to bear.
Why couldn’t the gods have shined brightly on their hopes and dreams? Why did they crush them like they were the devil himself? None of it made any sense. He had studied all the holy texts and memorized most of them from every great religion. Was it for some unforeseen glory? Was it a message that couldn’t be understood by humans? Did they somehow forsake the heavens?
There were two things Ryuji knew for certain. His love for his wife and that the heavens had helped them both through difficult times before. So he truly thought he should pray. “Izumo,” he said her name as sweetly as he could.
Her hand fell from his arm. Ryuji wrapped his arms around her tender weakened body as he placed his hand on the back of her head to stop her tears. Izumo’s chin rested on his shoulder. “I won’t leave your side. I’ll stay as long as you need me. I swear.”
He swore to any God or Buddha that would hear this single promise. He could pray in silence; he did not need an idol for that. Ryuji lied them both back into the bed so Izumo could sleep. His eyes stayed on her the entire time, forgetting to pray. All he did was simply brush her hair back.
Izumo smiled.
Confront
Suguro slammed his hand against the wall. “What the hell was that!?” He clenched his teeth, glaring down at his girlfriend. “Izumo.” He was just about ready to kill her for what she just did.
Izumo stood up against the wall. A normal person facing off against such a larger aggressive opponent would be peeing in their pants, but Izumo just stood there with no fear whatsoever. She just stared in the tall boy’s dark eyes. She let out a slight chuckle.
Suguro growled. “You think this is funny?” Suguro was on the verge of a rampage. His girlfriend of four months had actually gone and done the unthinkable right in front of his face. She had flirted with his friend Shima with no shame at all.
Izumo slightly smiled in amusement of the boy’s sudden anger. He had actually pulled her out of the classroom and brought her into the stairway. “Since when do you care what I do?” she questioned.
“What’s that suppose to mean?” Izumo was always a difficult girl to figure out, but her recent behavior made no sense at all. His hand trembled against the wall to keep himself from snatching up the girl and shaking her.
Izumo folded her arms across her chest. “What do you think I mean? Every guy in this school pays more attention to me than you do and I’m not even interested in any of them.”
“So you just did this to punish me?” Suguro questioned.
“It got your attention,” Izumo said simply. “Look I get you having to study and school.” She placed her hand on her chest while letting the other fall to her side. “But if I can make time for us, you should be able to as well.”
Suguro came in closer, putting the lower half of his forearm on the wall. He clenched his teeth harder. He had to admit he was neglecting their relationship lately, maybe. He hunched his shoulders and closed his eyes in frustration.
He then opened his eyes and shifted his pupils over to the side. “Look, I’m sorry.”
“Is that the best way you can apologize?” Izumo placed both of her hands on her hips.
Suguro took a step back, blushing. “Hey, I’m doing my best here. Just say you forgive me.”
“Why should I?”
Suguro grabbed a hold of the girl’s hips. He partially lifted her up against the wall she was on. He lowered his head to which she raised hers. Izumo laid her arms down on top of his. They gathered themselves into a passionate kiss.
Suguro broke the kiss, looking down at her gently. “Because I’m the only guy you’re interested in at this school.” He lowered her back down on her feet calmly.
“That’s true.” Izumo placed her hand on top of his arm. “So you’ll take me out tonight to make it up to me.” She moved his hands down off of herself. She went around him and headed up the stairs.
Suguro gazed back at the crafty witch. He smiled at the thought. “Right.”
Emotional Support
The darken sky cried like a weeping widow. Izumo Kamiki walked through the heavy rain on the grounds of True Cross Academy. She luckily brought her umbrella with her before the rain started. She had just gotten back from a mission with the other Exorcist students.
She was then called on another assignment. She was to find Ryuji Suguro since he had disappeared after the mission. It didn’t make much sense considering what happened during the mission; he should have been at the hospital.
Her feet walked through the watery path of the walkway up to the academy while free her hand was placed in her hoodie’s pocket when she spotted someone on the steps. She leaned forward to get a better look. Ryuji Suguro sat on the middle of the steps to the Academy. The teenage boy was hunch over with his head down and was completely soaked in the rain.
“What is that stupid gorilla doing?” She walked up to the boy. She gazed down at him to see that his tears were running down his face that mingled with the rain. His hair was down around his face as well, making his misery complete.
“What’s got you all down?” Izumo questioned. “You look like you lost your familiar or something?”
“Leave me alone, Izumo?” Ryuji said.
“I can’t.” Izumo moved over beside him and sat down, covering them both from the rain with the umbrella. “I was sent to bring you to the hospital. They think you should go visit the others and make sure they are alright.”
“There’s no way I can do that,” Ryuji said. Sadness and frustration build up inside of the pit of his stomach. He balled up his hands into fists that trembled on his legs. “I can’t face Konekomaru and Shima after what I did.”
Izumo shut her eyes and titled her head to the side. “You didn’t do anything.”
“I mess up the fatal verse,” Ryuji said. They had been battling against a group of ghouls and the only way to take them all out at once was to use their fatal verse; however, Ryuji had said a single word wrong in his desperate need to finish when the demon’s got too close to Shima and Konekomaru resulting in them both being seriously injured. “If Okamaru was there he could have kept everyone safe.”
Izumo looked out toward the rain. “You made a mistake. If you keep beating yourself up over one slip of the tongue then you’ll never defeat Satan.”
Ryuji stopped his self pity to look over at the girl. He was more than surprise by her little statement. “Weren’t you the one who laughed at my dream of defeating Satan?”
Izumo gazed down. “It’s still a ridiculous dream, but you’ve worked hard to get this far. You can’t go around second guessing yourself forever or you’ll never move forward. Believe me, I know that much.” Izumo remembered back to when Paku was attacked by a ghoul and she wasn’t able to help her. She had to rely on Rin.
Ryuji stared at her for a moment more then looked out to the rain. “Yeah, I guess you got a point there.”
Izumo shifted her large red eyes toward the boy. She slightly blushed at the sight of the boy smiling. She quickly regained her composer and shut her eyes, returning to her cold demeanor. “You should get to the hospital. I’m sure your flunkies are missing their Gorilla leader.”
Ryuji brought his attention back to the girl. He would normally get mad and start an argument with cold hearted tamer, but she had made him feel better so he decided to drop it. “Thanks for your help, Izumo.”
Izumo opened her eyes to see his smiling face. He then stood up and ran down the pathway. Izumo followed him with her eyes. She smirked. “Stupid Gorilla.”
