I love Bonnie Bennett. I love her power, her intelligence, her resilience. She’s one of the smartest characters on The Vampire Diaries, and she deserves so much respect—not just for what she can do, but for who she is.
And yes, I ship her—but not with Damon. I see the potential people talk about, sure, but personally? I just don’t like his character. After everything with Elena, the way he treated Bonnie was horrible. He abandoned her, blamed her, and never gave her the kind of respect she deserved. Damon never made her feel like she was the center of his world—and that matters.
And after what he did to Caroline? No. Just no. I like his character in parts, but looking back—especially since I didn’t watch the first season cuz it was so boring it’s impossible for me to see how Bonnie could ever let that go. She fights for people constantly. She sacrifices for people constantly. And Damon? He hurt his friends in ways that shouldn’t be excused. He had his humanity on, so what was his excuse? Rape, abuse…? That’s not someone Bonnie could forgive in her heart of hearts.
I’ve heard some people on Tumblr say that if you don’t ship Bonnie with Damon, you’re “not a real Bonnie lover.” Let me be clear: I am a real Bonnie lover. I love her character, I love her story—but I don’t agree with shipping her with someone who mistreated her.
And yes, the same could be said about Kai. He was toxic, manipulative, and in a lot of ways just as dangerous as Damon. But here’s the thing—Kai wanted to treat Bonnie like she was the only person in the world. He pushed her, challenged her, forced her to see her own power. In his own twisted way, he could have been the one to turn Bonnie into the villain we always wanted—the fully realized, unstoppable baddie era Bonnie. He could have taught her the magic, shown her the limits of her power, made her dangerous and brilliant. Damon could never have done that.
I see the love story in Enzo too. He cared for her, truly. I don’t think Benzo was perfect, and yes, the way the writers treated them was problematic, but I loved seeing Bonnie happy for once. Even if the pairing had flaws, it was powerful. It mattered. And I don’t hate it.
I also get why people ship her with Klaus. He’d treat her like she was the only person in the world, and I see that dynamic. But for me? Kol and Bonnie is unmatched. That combination of dangerous, unhinged, wild, but still protective and tender—that’s my heart.
I can appreciate all the dynamics, all the “what-ifs,” but the bottom line is this: Bonnie deserves love, respect, and storylines that make her feel seen. Damon could never give that to her, but there are plenty of others who could—and I root for them all.
Honestly? I just love Bonnie. I can see my Tumblr page slowly becoming more and more about her, and I just wanted to share my opinion, put it out there for anyone who comes across my page, and celebrate her the way she deserves.
“Please don’t explain racism to me. I live it. I can critique the writing and still love Benzo for giving Bonnie happiness. I’m not debating that here.”
“This is my opinion about Bonnie. You’re entitled to yours, but don’t come to my page to attack mine. Respect it or scroll past.”
