        he’d had the decency to stay out of view. taking time to wash the charcoal from his face so he was fairly put together by the ‘upper crust’ standards as he stood back. watching the small procession. a formality, it seemed. someone ed assumed was stede’s widow waxing poetically about stede’s life. talking about how he’d been ill -- had he been ill? that was new to ed. 

        the captain watched, tears of his own falling but mostly keeping it together as he watched as everyone gave their condolences to the family. doug taking the children away to whatever was next while mary stood last. ed finally stepping forward, at least if anyone knew he had come to say ... goodbye. it’d be her, right? 

     ❝ he’s a -- ❞ a pause, the pirate clearing his throat to keep the water from his tone. ❝ he was a good man, ya know. that husband of yours. ❞

when stede first met mary, he knew she wasn’t the one- even before she spoke, he knew it wouldn’t be that odd phrase that graced the skin of his arm. but the marriage was expected and neither of them wanted to go against the grain and disappoint their families, so married they were. fortunately, they were both able to come to terms with their situation and do what they could to make the best of it, even if stede still felt a bit stuck.

he sat in the living room, zoning out, thinking about the words etched into his skin of his inner arm.   the gentleman pirate, i presume.   what could it mean?

the sound of mary’s heels on the hardwood floor pulled stede from his reverie and he sat up, offering her a tight-lipped smile as she entered the room. “-mary? can i ask you- ...what do your words say?”

How it breaks his heart to hear her say that. All of his guilt made him fear that the children may have these worries, but to actually hear her say it- Stede is crushed.  “Alma...”  her name comes out in a soft sigh,  “darling, you didn’t do anything wrong. It wasn’t because of anything you did, or Louis. Or even your mother.”

There’s a brief pause as Stede reaches over to place a hand on his daughter’s shoulder.  “This might be hard to believe, but us adults don’t have everything figured out; we’re still learning as we go, just like you. And sometimes, we can make what seems like a good decision and end up hurting people in the process.”  Even with as well as his family had fared in his absence, he knows things aren't always black and white like that. They could be flourishing and still be hurt. 

“I have made a lot of mistakes recently. Leaving the way that I did is a big one, and I’m very sorry. I hope that you can forgive me.”

“Oh, would you look at that!”  Stede smiles, taking the smooth, grey stone from his son and turning it over in his hand to inspect it.  “What a find.”  He’s feigning more excitement than he actually feels in order to appease Louis, but the smile is genuine- the happiness he feels at seeing the look of pride on Louis’ face is genuine.  “Is this for me to keep?”

His children are the one good thing about coming home.

Mary doesn't want him here and Stede doesn't blame her; he left her and their children to go off on a selfish, foolish adventure. It's clear to him now that he doesn't belong in that world, but upon returning home, he discovers he doesn't belong here, either. Not anymore, if he ever did.

But the one good thing about coming home is the chance to reconnect with his children.

He loves them- desperately so- despite being a distracted and absent father before. Stede is determined to make the best of the situation now; he will not lose his children, too.

"Shh, settle down, Louis," he chuckles as the youngest bounces in bed. Stede tucks the covers around Alma and goes to do the same for his son. "How about a bedtime story, then? You two always loved when I read you stories."

Ely gave a firm and serious nod "That sounds like a very grown up course of action." They concluded without an inch of sarcasm in their voice "But, may I ask, why you've decided to do that?" Ely had a very distinct sense of impending doom.

They'd been left to babysit the children and it had been going surprisingly well... At least, until Alma said that. They presumed she was taking responsibility for something that Ely hadn't yet found out about and that, being the baby-sitter and all, they would also have to take responsibility for when everyones parents returned.

Ely had never minded babysitting. In fact, they'd quite enjoyed looking after the youngest foundlings who had just returned from their foster families at 4 years old to be trained as a maid or soldier. It had sometimes even gotten them out of training exercises which was a bonus. Even now that they were a pirate, babysitting wasn't off the table. A visit from the Bonnet family and Ely might as well have been a governess.

That night, there wasn't a storm or Ely likely would have been scared too. The sea was just a little bit choppy and sent the ship rocking. They'd heard Louis whimpering and had gone to check on him while the grown ups were busy eating dinner or something. Honestly, they'd been avoiding everyone aside from the kids today. They couldn't help feeling... odd about Mary and Doug being here. Ely knocked lightly before opening the door a crack. A soft smile crossed their face as they heard Louis' words.

"Of course I can." They sat down at the side of the bed and offered up their hand "What are you scared of?"

It had been months since the death of Stede Bonnet. Of course, the town was bustling for weeks after his untimely demise, curious about the gentleman turned pirate. But as all things do, the excitement wore off and his name settled into the annals of curious, but ultimately forgettable events.

That was, of course, when the Gentleman Pirate decided to pay a visit to the Widow Bonnet.

Stede was all but unrecognizable after months at sea. His skin was suntanned and freckled, hair bleached a softer blond from the sun and salt air, and he sported a short beard. He was dressed simply but still well, in a pair of sky blue breeches with a flowing shirt that opened at the collar. A smattering of blond chest hair peeked out over the top. But the biggest difference was how he carried himself now. He walked with a kind of confidence he'd never before known, and there was a twinkle in his eye like he knew a secret you didn't.

He slipped in through the back door of the estate; Stede knew it was unlikely that anyone would recognize him, but he didn't want to risk it anyway.

"Mary?" he called through the house, setting his back down on the dining table before going to look for his family. "Children? I've brought presents!"
