Reading a Nghi Vo book, even a new one, feels like coming home. Vo is giving me a blanket named "lovingly detailed worldbuilding" and a warm cup of tea named "complex, varied, and flawed characters that show a deep appreciation of humanity" and I am sitting down by the fire called "smooth, witty, and incisive writing style" and getting cozy

I was given the opportunity to interview Jackie Khalilieh and the event was at A Different Booklist in Toronto! It was such a great space and had so many diverse titles. The audience was wonderful and the afternoon was full of laughter.

It’s so frustrating when you read classics and they actually are that good because what are you supposed to say?? Oh hey everyone, did you know Agatha Christie is actually a great writer?? Did you know she’s super readable and funny and the plots are extremely compelling?? How embarrassing for me

so today on Ruden talks about books (has never happened before)

Hell Followed With Us is a story about a trans main character fighting for his life in an apocalypse/dystopian world made by a cult with extremist christian views. The boy, Benji, is fighting to escape their hold on him as they have made injected a sickness deep in his body that is supposed to make him into the one and only creature that will allow them to purge the low amounts of humans still alive and gain gods favor + a way into heaven. Benji finds some solace and friends in a group that takes safety in a community center for queers, which all of them happen to be.

I was quite honestly captivated by this story, I spent so much of my few days reading this that I finished it in the midst of a very busy week of people visiting my family. It has honest to god real showings of trans AND autistic mindsets as one of the other main characters is Autistic !!

It genuinely made me really happy as this was one of the only physical books i’ve read with a natural trans character. Also there were twists that I very much wasn’t expecting, which I feel like i kinda should have expected one of them, but i’ve been tired.

People do have more negative opinions sometimes based on viewing the writing negatively, which i’ll leave some reviews from GoodReads down below :]

Tell Me That I'm Wrong

One of the hardest things about reading is that you will never go through the adventures that the characters your age did.

Like I hate reading about your favorite character and suddenly realizing all the amazing, dangerous and fun stuff that they did when they were your age and realizing that you never did that, and never will.

And I'm not talking about romance, I'm talking about the excitement, the deadly adventures that leave you breathless and begging for more. I'm talking about those moments when you hide from your enemy, kill your demons, ruin those who have wronged you, and live life like you can't die.

Where is my adventure? Where are my deadly missions that leave me bleeding and wounded? Where is the magic that courses through my hand every time I get angry?

I'm very disappointed that I won't be able to live the life that books told me I would live.
