Good Omens book rebinding pt 1
Today I prepared the text block and tomorrow I make, paint, and detail the cover!
Good Omens book rebinding—The Finale!
As of 7:40 AM yesterday morning, the rebind is finished! I will need to try it again because I got all the measurements wrong and the text block is not connecting to the spin at all, but I did it! Haha! My first attempt at binding down! It can only go up from here!
I’m starting my next project tonight, my goal is to get proficient enough so I can bind Good Omens again and do it properly next time. For now though, it’s an adorable messed up work of art that I am proud of.
Chronicles of Narnia Rebinding Pt 4 — Goodbye Planning
A dump of pictures on how different the cover art is becoming from the original plan. It literally has nothing to do with the books but now decided to be an art piece instead. Such is life I suppose. At least it’s been very meditative!
And it’s still not finished yet. I’m just letting it dry as I embark on a side quest of bookbinding to fix something my dog broke.
The Chronicles of Narnia Rebinding Pt. 3
This past week I’ve been repositioning, gluing, pressing down, and painting the cover! I found out that I’ve been spacing the cardstock way too far apart. And one coat of black acrylic goes much farther than the white one, let me tell you.
But I came up with a cover art concept that I’m excited for! I’m gonna paint bright, light colors to represent an aurora for the musical staff!
The Chronicles of Narnia Rebinding Pt 2
Well, here is part two of the rebinding! I learned that dividing papers between text blocks to separate the two separate books is usually better as one dividing paper over the folded two you make for end papers. Thus I needed a little more glue for the text block than I originally wanted.
From there I went on to work on making the actual cover and for this I have two pieces of advice:
Keep the original paper back cover for measuring (it makes making the measurements so much easier).
Sit down when you do this. Standing up might be great for the body but trying to use a ruler is a pain.
I noticed that my cardstock was slightly bent which makes it harder to adhere to the cork fabric, so I’m testing a theory. I put my heaviest book down on top of my cover drying cover then placed the text block on top, followed by my other books that I use for pressing to see if that will flatten the stock out and help it stick to the fabric.
I also suggest making templates from the covers out of construction paper. This can be multi-use as it makes it easier to take measurements as well as help with keeping the fabric glued down to the cardstock if you’re using cork fabric.
Good Omens Rebinding pt 4.
We’re finally designing the cover! Since this is very much a learning curve where everything is just missing the mark of where I want it to, I decided to embrace the childishness of the cover and add a little head canon to it.
Since in the book Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchet have it where they exist in the world of the book presenting the reader with a more historical account, why wouldn’t the Them know them or help as well?
Therefore, the Them helped make the cover! So I’m really diving into bright colors and kinda minimalist aesthetics for the drawings.
It’s been super fun so far!
Good Omens rebinding part 2
So uh, this is taking much longer than originally thought. While I was at work, I sketched out a cover illustration idea and now I’m actually making the cover. Cork cloth doesn’t like Elmer’s glue so I’m forcing it down with construction paper. My plan is to hopefully paint it tonight.
