Remember when you were a kid and you’d be playing Rock, Paper, Scissors and some other annoying kid would think they were being sooo clever by yelling “BOMB” to end the game?
That’s Good Omens 3 to me, and specifically the Book of Life plot device and The Decision to end everything.
Rather than engage with the pre-existing rules and tone of the game, the writers of GO3 threw in a last-minute destructive plot device in service of a philosophical conclusion that made the whole conceit collapse. Oh, you liked the rock-paper-scissors worldbuilding? Lmao, well, it’s all bombed now, NERD!
Yes, it’s a made-up silly game. You can subvert expectations if you want, sure. But you’re still an asshole for derailing the assumptions of good faith everyone else was bringing to the game. People don’t like it when you defy established rules just because you want to win and feel superior.
Throwing in a game-breaking move that doesn’t fit the tone of the situation isn’t clever. Ruining the game for everyone else isn’t kind.
Sometimes it’s more fun for everyone if you use the parameters of the existing fantasy to solve the problem at hand, rather than just blowing the fantasy apart.
