Depends what type of romance you want. I’m a big Sally Rooney messy modern romance fan so anything by her I would recommend

i'm not going to get around to doing a reading wrap-up for last month--and probably not this month either--but i've been reading a lot of excellent stories/novels in my class, and i think it would be a crime not to at least tell you about the ones that have stood out to me so you can read them too:

hey, miranda! any recommendations for someone who’s been in a reading slump?

you asked this at just the right time because i’m coming off an awful, three month long reading slump, and i’m trying my best to catch up on my reading goal (as you’ve seen lol). i find when i’m in a reading slump, shorter, punchier stories are better for me than slow ones that require patience. having said that, i’m going to go against most of what i just said when i say that i broke out of my reading slump with the ballad of songbirds & snakes by suzanne collins. songsbirds & snakes is the biggest of the hunger games series, and sometimes slower to the punch than the others, but it worked for me because i had the motivation of needing to finish it before the movie came out. and i did! but i understand that might not be a motivating factor for all, so here are two short, impactful stories i read recently that might also help:

i who have never known men by jacqueline harpman. this is a short story about a woman who lives in an underground bunker with a bunch of other women, and who has for as long as she can remember. as the title suggests, this character has never met known a man, and she hasn’t really gotten to know what life was before they all got trapped. as the story unravels, you slowly begin to learn little bits about the women while also exploring what humanity is through the eyes of someone who knows nothing very little about it. this is incredibly heartbreaking, but insanely good.

small things like these by claire keegan. this is another short story centered around the scandal about mother and baby homes in ireland. in the story a local coal merchant discovers something that forces him into a difficult position. while this veers towards bleak a lot of the time, i found the ending to be heartwarming and inspiring.

morning Miranda <3 i'm on a reading slump all year (méh) but I really enjoyed Slaughterhouse Five and To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf. Death at Intervals by José Saramago is a shorter one and lovely too

send me your favorite reads of 2022

good morning nonie!!! reading slumps are the worst and i’ve tried to actively fight my way through many of them all year. i’ve been meaning to get around to slaughterhouse five for some time, and both to the lighthouse and death at intervals sound very intriguing. thank you so much! i hope you get out of your reading slump! i personally recommend: euphoria by lily king, the night watchmen by louise erdrich, trust by hernan diaz, and the days of abandonment by elena ferrante. those have been some of my favorites this year

Hi! Which are the books that you have read this year that you recommend the most?

I haven't read a whole lot of books this year (only about twenty and some of them were for school), but here is a list of the ones that really stuck out to me:

Luster by Raven Leilani. I read this about four days ago and it's by far my favorite read of 2021. It follows this twenty-something-year-old black woman named Edie as she navigates her way through her chaotic life, and it's just so well written and beautiful. If you liked Fleabag, you will probably like this book. So much about it has stuck with me the past few days and I really can't recommend it highly enough. Also, it's being adapted into an HBO series by Tessa Thompson!

The Queen's Gambit by Walter Levis. If you've watched the show, this book doesn't really offer a whole lot more, but it was a very good read anyways. I don't know anything about chess and there were a lot of chess matches being described in this story, but they never bored me. Levis has a very good way of writing this scenes out to be interesting, even for those who don't know much about chess.

Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger. I got this recommendation from Pedro himself, and though I was hesitant at first because I did not like the Catcher in the Rye, I loved this. This was a very quick read and it made me fall in love with reading again.

Both Conversations with Friends and Normal People by Sally Rooney. Sally Rooney is one of my favorite authors. I love the way she writes her dialogue and I love that the characters are messy and young and unsure. I loved Normal People a little more than Conversations with Friends, I think, but only because I really found a lot of myself being reflected in the character of Connell. He's one of my favorite fictional men.

Tessa Bailey's Window Shopping. The romance genre is relatively new to me and I'm not so sure it's for me yet, but I really, really loved this story. It's a very quick read, its inspired by Ted Lasso, it's a little Spicy, and it's Christmas themed, so if that sounds like something you like, you'll probably like it.

Also, I haven't finished it yet but I'm also reading My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh right now and I'm really enjoying it.

Idk what you've read or not so I'll pepper in some stuff so you can decide if anything sounds good. Mostly scifi/fantasy recs with different flavour but The Disposessed, The Raven Tower, All the Light We Cannot See, Never Let Me Go, The Binding and Slade House. None of them are too long but all of them are very neat, either for their writing, content or both!!
