Review: Heartless

Synopsis:

Four gorgeous girls are telling very ugly stories.

First Emily, Aria, Hanna, and Spencer claimed they found a dead body in the woods behind Spencer's house, only to have it vanish without a trace. Then, when the same woods went up in flames, they swore they saw someone who's supposed to be dead rise from the ashes. And even after all that, the pretty little liars are still playing with fire. Call me heartless, but it's about time someone shut these liars up for good. After all, nobody likes a girl who cries wolf—least of all me.

Plot:

Ali is alive, well, maybe? Inhaling smoke makes you hallucinate, but it is not common for all smoke victims to hallucinate the same thing. Standing outside the burning barn, all four girls saw someone who looked like Ali, but the police told them that the body in the gazebo had a 100% DNA match to Ali. So who was this blonde girl? Spencer says it was the smoke, deciding to move on and bask in the love her parents are finally showing to her, getting special treatment from both mom and dad. She is finally happy until A makes her sabotages herself by digging into her parent's past. Emily truly believes it was Ali and decides to follow up on A's hint by visiting an Amish community where A promises it would lead Emily to clues about what happened to Ali. Aria thinks she saw a ghost and makes a somewhat romantic connection with a typical Rosewood boy when they meet at a séance. Aria finally gets peace with her long-dead best friend. Hanna, well, Hanna did not have time to process anything, as her father immediately shipped her off to a rehab center to work on her eating disorder and her Mona issues. Making friends with her pretty and cold-hearted roommate Iris, Hanna does not take the warning to be wary of her new roomie and instead treats her like the Mona/Ali she always wanted. With the media calling these girls the Pretty Little Liars, they knock down their doors, asking them where Ian's body is, why they are saying they saw Ali, if A is even real, and if they are the ones that initially killed Alison DiLaurentis.

Thoughts:

Sara Shepard moves us deeper into the worlds of Rosewood and the Pretty Little Liars that live there. Now recognizing their name, the liars focus more on finding Ali's killer than finding out who A is or caring about A's impressive body count. Unlike previous books, A's a character in this one and plays both sides of the liars, making some like Emily think they are there to help. However, Spencer still sees A as the main threat in her life. As usual, Shepard lets the middle of the book flop, only to make the last chapter enjoyable, making you die for the next one but not willing to re-read this one. Mixing up their style, Shepard did not have this leading up to an event/party, instead of making the liars gather in a way that was not predicted, and one where none of them were in danger, but also all of them in danger by the law. For overall series progression, this novel only did that at the end, with only minor influence in the character's life as Aria gets a new love interest, and Spencer potentially destroys her family again. Now for the best and worst, shockingly, Spencer's parents are not the worst in this novel, as this is probably the only book in the series that they are considered decent parents, well until the end, but that is kind of acceptable considering what Spencer does. So the worst character, I would say Spencer, for being dumb and misreading the signs and not realizing the truth she had was a loaded grenade by A. Best character, let's shout out Aria, who is being less judgemental of the typical Rosewood boy and finding peace will Ali's death from talking to her spirit. Overall, Shepard definitely leaves you itching for the next book, as the liar's story is nowhere near done.

A Suspects:

The concept of the novel is our four girls trying to find out who A is, thus I thought it would be fun to keep a suspect list to see how many people Shepard writes for the girls to at one point suspect and by whom. So here is the list for book #7:

As Shepard keeps killing people off, I think it would be a good idea to keep track of who died, but without spoiling the ending of the current book, as her habit is killing them off with two chapters to go. So here is the list of the dead for the previous book #6:
