topping & co., bath (uk)
Absolutely STUNNING bookshop that I just had to visit on my little break in Bath last weekend. Obviously broke the book-buying ban. Obviously have no regrets.

"In Baghdad, Iraq, there’s a historic street called Al-Mutanabbi Street, famous as the city’s book market and cultural hub. For centuries, it has been the heart of intellectual and literary life in Iraq. What makes it remarkable is the tradition of leaving books out overnight, completely unattended. Vendors trust that their books won’t be stolen because of a well-known Iraqi saying: “The reader does not steal, and the thief does not read.”
This practice reflects the deep respect for knowledge and literature in Iraqi culture. The markets are filled with books of all kinds—old, new, religious, scientific, historical, and literary—stacked high on stalls or spread out across the street. Families, students, poets, and scholars gather there to browse and exchange ideas. Despite wars and hardships, the book market has remained a symbol of resilience, showing that even in difficult times, the pursuit of knowledge continues to hold a sacred place in society."

"Bookshops’ success should never be seen in isolation. In a connected ecosystem such as books, bookseller success means books succeeding, authors succeeding, publishers succeeding, readers succeeding, reading succeeding. Their success is not specific to them, but essential to us all." "The contemporary bookshop is a community hub, a creative industries epicentre and a launchpad for the readers of today and tomorrow. The bookseller of 2025 is an innovative entrepreneur, a grassroots community builder and a skilled curator."
