Review of ‘North and South’ by innocent-nirvana-reader! Thank you, Olya <3

North and South is one of the best known novels of a British writer Elizabeth Gaskell whose works are often compared with the works of Charles Dickens, William Thackeray and Charlotte Brontë.

This novel is about a young lady Margaret Hale who is forced to leave her native warm South and move to the industrial town of Milton with her family, which is in stark contrast to the place where she used to live. This change of scene makes the life of Margaret unbearable. The young lady witnesses theindustrial revolution, the first organized strikes and injustice towards workers. However, Margaret tries to deal with her new life anyway. She finds friends in Milton and becomes acquainted with the cotton mill manufacturerJohn Thornton…

I can’t say that I’m a big fan of this kind of literature as I haven’t read many English social novels but this book is worth reading! In spite of the fact that the mood prevalent in the novel is quite melancholic and gloomy, North and South is a brilliant book. The tone of the novel is very dramatic; Elizabeth Gaskell lays bare all problems of the characters. The characters areauthentic and their psychology is well rendered. It was interesting for me to watch the development of Margaret and John`s relationship. At the beginning they seem quite different but with the passage of time I found more and moreresemblance between the young lady and manufacturer.

The book contains a great deal of what was topical at the time, the burning issues of the author’s day. At the same time, it deals with the problems which do not change in time and fashion. The story strikes the reader with its sincerity and authenticity. It gives food for thought. So I definitely recommend everyone to read “North and South” in order to enjoy rich language and an unusual plot of the story.

Нет, девушка не говорит “Я в четверге” :) Эту фразу по-хорошему надо бы разбить на две части, но, эй, добро пожаловать в век быстрых технологий и корявых переписок. Свое соглашение она выражает как просто “I’m in”. Thursday - просто уточнение, с каким именно планом она соглашается :) (параллельно обсуждались другие варианты)
