I'm half cuban and my dad is brown but I pass as white and im really assimilated. To top it off, my visibly brown family insists we're white (probably due to their antiblack racism). I don't know how to identify. I've definitely been discriminated against when my dad shows up to school (if I stand next to another Latino person, I look latino). But idk if thats just bc my father is a POC. I might not be. What do yall think?
i know racial identity is complex in Latinx communities. i am not Latinx so my advice is general, but having a parent of colour does make you a PoC, even if you pass sometimes. your passing privilege doesn't outweigh your heritage. your heritage doesn’t outweigh your privilege. they are part of each other and you. you’re a PoC, you’re latino. its up to you how to label yourself with how you’re most comfortable. plenty of white passing latinx in the public eye (see: Isabella Gomez, Selena Gomez, Cameron Diaz, Rita Moreno) still identify as Latinx and acknowledge their passing privilege, but as I said its up to you how you wanna identify. x
