The members of the International Control Commission came down from their rooms into the lobby of Hôtel Splendid to have tea. The Poles formed a solid bloc. They moved, ate, drank, slept, always in a group, refusing all contact with the outside world. They kept a close watch on one another and when they walked through the streets of Hanoi they seemed to be refusing the sun, the heat, the green waters of the lake and the girl with her skirt fluttering in the breeze. They had brought their prison with them.

Nguyen began shifting his weight from one foot to the other:
‘You're wrong; he even follows our action so closely that for a long time we thought he was one of those superpolicemen whom the capitalists use to protect themselves. He's nothing of the sort. With his placid expression and weak eyes, his white shirts, his hat and his gloves, this big bourgeois a certain French tradition of friendship and therefore a fellow-feeling for all those who revolt against an established order, even if this order has been established by his own country... The memory of the French revolution... Who knows?’
‘It's because of a few men like him that we shall never be able to hate France completely.’
...tried to end the madness by means of more madness.
Want.
