Between 2012 and 2016 I was responsible for my mother's care during a steady decline in her health. Over those four years, I visited her regularly, often four or five times a week, and during those visits I'd read to her because we both loved reading and books. I read Margaret Atwood to her, and the Chronicles of Narnia, and scores of Agatha Christie. But most importantly, I read her the entire Harry Potter series. You may not know this, but the story of Harry Potter is very well suited to being read aloud, and reading the series to her is one of my fondest and most cherished memories of her. In reading them aloud to my mother, these copies of the series have been imprinted with an extra magic above the book's actual content.
