When Women Were Warriors by Catherine M. Wilson

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE these books! This is honestly probably one of my favorite series EVER. And if you like Historical fiction/fantasy, you might enjoy it as well.

The story is about Tamras, a young woman who goes to live with the Lady Merin to become a warrior. While there she meets Maara, who teaches her all about what’s truly important about being a warrior and more. Don’t expect a crazy amount of fighting in this one though because it’s mostly about not fighting.

Backwards to Oregon by Jae

Lesbian cowboy type story? Hell yes!

Think Oregon Trail but with lesbians, one of which passes as a man. I quite enjoyed this historical fiction. And you might well too if you enjoy western type stories.

Luke Hamilton is a retired soldier, a woman passing as a man. She’s ready to start a new life and does so by marrying Nora McCauley, a prostitute with a 3 yr old daughter named Amy, on the spot and then taking them with her on the Oregon Trail. But, Nora doesn’t know Luke’s secret when they marry, making things quite difficult for Luke as life in a wagon train isn’t exactly private. Nor is it an easy secret to keep when she and Nora start to have feelings for one another.

Ok. I love this entire series! Like, a lot!

The Caphenon is the first book in the Chronicles of Alsea series. And since each book is quite different, sometimes following new/different characters (though always going back to the essential group), I’ll be doing a review for each book.

Ekatya Serrado, the Captain of the Protectorate spaceship, The Caphenon, crash lands on a planet called Alsea with a skeleton crew and her girlfriend, Lhyn Rivers, who wasn’t supposed to be on the ship. They crash land because they were protecting the planet from the Voloth invaders. Before The Caphenon crashed, Alseans were not sure that there was other life in the universe. The Alseans are an empathic race of humanoid beings. Lancer Andira Tal is the leader of the planet of Alsea, and she must figure out how to now deal with the two opposing forces of the Protectorate and the Voloth.

I absolutely positively recommend this book and the entire series really. 5 stars.

The Sublime and Spirited Voyage of Original Sin by Colette Moody

This book is adorable. I perhaps wish that it would have gone a bit more in depth than it did at times, but I still quite enjoyed it. The character banter, in particular, was pretty funny to the point where I startled my dog with my laughter.

Recommend. 4 stars.

Hidden Truths by Jae is the second book in the Oregon series, the first of which was Backwards to Oregon.

I loved the first book, but I think I loved this one more honestly.

Hidden Truths takes place 17 years after Backwards to Oregon, when Luke Hamilton, a woman passing as a man, married Nora McCauley, a prostitute with a daughter named Amy and they traveled the Oregon Trail together. Hidden Truths mostly follows Amy, now a grown woman and living on her parents’ horse ranch in Oregon. Amy has a few secrets of her own and when a mail order bride shows up to marry the foreman of the ranch, things get interesting.

Definitely recommend. 5 stars.

Revelry is a Decadence by Sydney Gibson

Ok so, I quite liked this book but it also annoyed me a bit.

When I read it a while ago it had typos, grammatical errors and inconsistencies in the writing that made it seem like the author didn’t really edit much. She may well have gone back and fixed all of that though.

BUT, with that being said, I still really enjoyed the story on the whole. WLW angels and vampires, what’s not to love? And I’m looking forward to the second book.

I struggled with this rating because of the errors and inconsistencies, but because I still think it’s a really good story I give it 4 stars.

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg

Ok, now this is also a movie and it’s one of my favorite movies EVER. This one is a classic.

Historical fiction set in the south during the 1930s, but there is also a “present day” storyline that takes place in the 80s. There’s no queer action during the 80s storyline, but there are definitely strong hints that Idgie Threadgood is hella gay and in love with Ruth.

There isn’t a lot of outright WLW activity in this one, but if you haven’t watched the movie or read this book I recommend it. 5 Stars

Partners by Melissa Good

I quite liked this 2 book series, but I could see some people having issues with it.

Obviously this one is sci-fi. Post apocalyptic sci-fi, to be more specific. The main character, Jess, is like a badass special forces agent and her new partner is Dev, a “biological alternative” aka like a synthetic human with her DNA encoded synthetically and grown in a lab with wires hooked up to her brain so that she can receive “programs”. So yes, there is a relationship that builds between a human and a synthetic human. Which may potentially turn some people off.

Even though Dev is bio-alt and kind of sometimes has a “synth” feel to her mannerisms and stuff, she is still essentially human and I still recommend this book to anyone looking for some interesting post apocalyptic sci-fi. 5 Stars.
