Thoughts: not sure i liked this and the character development took some rather incredible leaps, but it did make me cry several times, so there must be something to it

Very strange. Not BAD, I read it and didn't hate it, but I don't really know that i feel any particular way about it.
Spent most of the time wondering what it was actually ABOUT (not asking questions, getting answers or solving anything, clearly) and finally in the last couple of chapters was very much "oh, it's supposed to be about grief" and then that was kind of it.

Really gets across a claustrophobic feeling of always being monitored, never being safe, of living in a no-win scenario and knowing it - but still, living

This just felt a little bit too easy.
Also, I have zero patience for Clemmie and have no idea why any of them put up with her. She does nothing that isn't transparently self-serving the entire time and puts people including children in genuine danger without any regret - and the part where we see Sera being angry with her about it is almost presented as only an expression of Sera being in a bad mental space, rather than being entirely reasonable, which I found immensely frustrating
I realise it wasn't the story the author wanted to tell, but there was another story inside this one about a child being sort-of-tricked into cutting off a limb in order to save their parent figure's life and dealing with that loss, still believing on some level that it was worth it, and coming to terms with that.

Enjoyable little bite-sized things that make a lot more sense than the main ysthar book (but, tragically, without lending any clarity to it)
