Name: Boom Fly
Debut: The Binding of Isaac
It's been, like, two and a half weeks since I've posted about some Funny Flies. I'm well overdue! If I want to find a lot of fictional funny flies in great density, I know I can refer to a digital child's imaginary hell. The Binding of Isaac is full of flies, since they're decomposers and therefore ripe for Scary Yucky Decay Imagery, but I really just cannot bring myself to see any actual animal as scary. A fly is just s funny critter like any other!
So first, we have the basic Boom Fly! Most fly enemies in the game are too small for their faces to be visible, but Boom Fly is a portly little bugger, and so we get to see its wonderful, wonderful jagged smile. It has not a care in the world as it moves in straight diagonal lines around the room (a staple of it and its variants), not even caring that it will explode if defeated. I don't think Boom Fly comprehends the idea of "being defeated". I think it just spends its days in utter glee, because yippee! It's a big round fly, and that's a wonderful thing to be!
Many gamers hate Boom Fly for its chaotic nature. But I don't think I'm biased just because it's a cute fly. Its path is extremely predictable, and as for the explosion, you just need to keep track of which flies you've attacked the most. Sorry to the haters, but I think I reserve the right to say "skill issue"! Even if there is that one goofy room with a single thin bridge and four Boom Flies flying around. The Boom Fly Bridge, where many have fallen. Get used to seeing it, because it will be Boom Fly's home stage in Super Smash Bros. for Wii TWO!
What a shame that Boom Fly is your enemy then, huh?
Not all of them! This is BBF, the Big Beautiful Fly, a familiar that is literally just a friendly Boom Fly! It flies around just like one, and explodes powerfully if it touches an enemy. Hooray! This one is immortal. Since BBF has Beautiful in its name, that means it is not up to interpretation. You DO think this fly is beautiful, and if you don't, you have no respect for canon!
Do you want Boom Fly to be red? It's okay if you do. We can make it happen. See? Red Boom Fly! Rather than being full of ambiguous explosive substance, Red Boom Fly is full of blood. Not in a mosquito way! In a water balloon way. Instead of exploding, a defeated Red Boom Fly releases blood projectiles in all directions, which is extra bothersome to a player. But I can't blame it! I, too, would release blood if I was defeated.
This blue-m fly is Drowned Boom Fly. Oh, bother! Boom Fly has gone and drowned. That must have been uncomfortable. I'd personally express my condolences, but Drowned Boom Fly just keeps flying around in diagonal lines. Rude! When Drowned Boom Fly is defeated, it explodes AND shoots out some blood bits, AND births an aggressive drowned maggot! Honestly just irresponsible parenting.
I will finish this selection of Boomflylikes with perhaps my favorite of all! This is Big Fan, a friendly fly that is so named because it is a big fan of YOU! Big Fan slowly orbits around Isaac, blocking any incoming projectiles, because it is nice. Pretty much all the fly familiars in this game have names alluding to them being your fan or friend, and it's very nice to see, really. So many creatures love you!
Big Fan's adoration is so great, in fact, that it overrides the concept of "items". You see, a random pill effect can grant a Pretty Fly, a protective orbiting fly. If a big ol' Horse Pill version of the Pretty Fly pill is used, it will spawn a Big Fan! You can have as many as you can get! You don't even need to pick up Big Fan as an item. Big Fan will find its way to you, and Big Fan will help you. Because it loves you.
