warning signs

the sands rustle and hiss as they spread themselves out across the dunes, this particular area of the wasteland less simply brittle and torrid, but uneven, dusty, and golden, the kinds of areas most snarling, scavenging beasts tend to avoid. tracking through indentations on the ground, footprints, and scents left in the wakes of shadows is made difficult out this far, by the shifting landscape, the floor of the world quick to forget you, to swallow you up, to erase your existence from the tapestry of the universe. it’s ares’ favorite stretches of the valley of slaughter, the patchwork ground making him feel more like himself, something steady against the hazardous variations, tall and dark against the off-white sheen of near-blinding powder; a blackhole in the midst of the sun.
but he’s not the only one to wander out this far, not the only one able to hunt in even the most desolate of scraps the desert has to offer, and even though he usually likens himself with the wild, raging wolverns, huge black monsters morphed and hideous, damn near unstoppable, all teeth and claws and fury and hunger, this time he finds himself racing against one. he’d picked up the trail of a singular two-legged humanoid before the wind howled too sharply against the grains to cover the footprints up, gotten curious enough to follow them, to pursue them through the haze, until they reached tall, risen cliffs, shards of the world cutting out into the sky, jutting upwards like blades, huge and imposing and probably full of caves.
it doesn’t take him long to realize there’s a wolvern here, roaming, snarling, hounding, but blind of course and off it’s trail, teeth gnashing and snapping frustrated, and he sidesteps as carefully as he’s learned out in the past six years of dealing with them; protos have a distinct advantage over humans when it comes to silence. but that’s right when he spots him-- a male off to the side of the rugged path, his back slightly turned towards ares, unaware of him yet, but surely not oblivious to the creature? what the hell is he doing all the way out here?
