friends, it is very ridiculous how excited i am for boost house. i created pages for boost house on tumblr, twitter, and youtube over a month ago, but theres so much more coming.. i want to share my ideas with you in case you're interested in being a part of it
boost house will be two things: a publisher, and an actual house out of which that publisher is run. together it is the community embodiment of the boost. the stated purpose of boost house is the following:
boost house will be a powerful force for uniting alt humor with positive spirituality and social conscience on a mass scale. boost house will revive youth interest in literature by fusing poetry to a broader cultural purpose of creating positive social change, and trying hard to help others. alt aesthetics should be a signpost for alt politics--for anti-oppression and environmental justice--boost house will strengthen these connections.
so the publisher is not just a source of new poetry. it will use poetry to make a broader cultural thrust: boost house wants to make it cool to be positive and activist. internet-based poetry is a very powerful medium for doing that work. but it's not the only powerful medium, and boost house will use other media too. at first, boost house will mostly curate existing content, sharing already-published writing/art. after the brand is more established, i'll look more to submissions
boost house wil release printed books and zines prolifically--also shirts, stickers, posters, probably dvd's or albums. one of the first releases will be a book of walt whitman's poetry, edited and with a foreword by me. i'm planning to use a subscriber model of patronage akin to hunter payne's best mail on planet earth, altho most releases may be sold individualy as well. in the future i'm hoping to partner with established social change groups, and actualy run campaigns thru boost house's network, or aim our community at boosting existing campaigns
the profits from book/merch sales will go toward rent and food costs for the actual house. i'll contribute other funds of my own (from touring) for rent and food too. i want to offer free residence to 3-7 other people, who will help me run boost house and related projects, and go hard on their own creative work constantly in the house. more on those positions below
for personal reasons to me, the actual boost house wil be located in the #rare state of maine, probably near brunswick, and starting in november. the sought-after atmosphere in the house, almost every day, will be of simultaneously working hard and partying (sober). we wil be creating something prolific and positive together! whether or not all residents identify as "vegan," we'll use a co-op house model of trading off cooking a big vegan meal each night. the IRL community in maine may be small, so IRL events may not be a huge priority at first, but idealy there woud be a reading series or recurring open-mic in the house, a lending library, vegan potlucks, and documentary showings (or possibly a whole free school)
im still deciding which exact positions i need filled, and realisticaly the positions may be quite loose, but i've identified four areas i want help with: (1) acounting and biz dev, planning the financial side of boost house into the future, managing our focus to make sure we do what's needed to thrive as a legal, sustainable business.. (2) booking tours for me and other boost house artists, coordinating with hosts about payment and fliers/fb events, possibly coming along on tours.. (3) running the online store, packaging merch and staying organized despite complex orders and slip-ups.. (4) doing book layout, designing images for the internet, and co-running the social media for boost house, vegan frickwad, and lief+
i get very excited thinking about this.. for me the most exciting aspect of boost house may be building community, a tight community almost like family. i've drifted somewhat from the "alt lit" comunity i helped build in 2011-12, and maybe i have reason for that, but i stil crave those bonds and interaction, it was my favorite part of my work in 2012. with boost house i want to rebuild a tight inner community, this time based more explicitly around the goal of making the world a beter place
if you're interested in being part of this, i'd love for u to email me about your interest--steveroggenbuck at gmail.com--but mainly just stay alert to further updates. i'm planning to do a fundraiser and accept applications pretty soon. the aplications are because i want to make sure we share a similar vision about making the world a better place and have compatible ideas about positivity, spirituality, poetry, anti-oppression, activism, feminism, veganism, drugs, etc !! so i will ask people to write about their feelings on all those subjects
thank u friends for your ongoing suport! this is big for me. in early 2012 i mentioned a plan to start an "alt lit house" in 2013, and ever since then i've been clarifying to myself what that should actualy mean. now its time to make my dream come true :)
