Border Incident was released in the US on 28 October 1949.

Director Anthony Mann takes John C. Higgins script (based on a story by George Zuckerman), and along with cinematographer John Alton, combines the western genre with film noir in a story about the smuggling (and abuse) of illegal immigrants into the US. Much of the film was shot on location along the US-Mexican border.

Now, these are just river buoys. But this would appear to indicate that Russia is going to keep pressing for more land, and if nothing else, worry their neighbors to the west.

23rd of May by Estonia: Russian border guards removed the buoys that demarcate a river on the Narva River. Head of the Estonian police border guard said: "The Estonian and Russian authorities installed the buoys that separate the territories on a yearly basis. . . the respective authorities agreed on the buoys locations in 2022, but Russia then backtracked and disputed the placement of more than half of the 250 markers. Russian border guards then unilaterally began removing them on May 23rd, without providing an explanation for their actions."

And what is Narva? A city, on a river, that feeds into a large lake, and also? Into the Baltic sea. It could be a potentially strategic stronghold in a larger conflict.

So either a mental attack to install anxiety into Estonia, or preparation for an argument to invade Estonia.

Rating Ricardo Montalbán Films - Part I

Fiesta (1947)

Synopsis: A brother and sister do their best to live up to the expectations of their former bullfighter father.

Rating: 4/5

Reason: One star removed for a lack of resolution in María's plotline. The movie is a great lighthearted family drama, but could have used another 15-30 minutes to resolve a few loose threads.

Border Incident (1949)

Synopsis: Two cops, one Mexican and one American, go undercover to find the people behind a human trafficking operation at the border, but things get quickly out of hand and not even the police can save them.

Rating: 5/5

Reason: From beginning to end this is a tightly paced, tightly plotted story. With lots of twists and turns it tells a compelling story without pulling any punches.

Neptune's Daughter (1949)

Synopsis: A case of mistaken identity causes two sisters to believe they are both being wooed by the same man, in the process of untangling the mess both women manage to fall in love.

Rating: 3/5

Reason: This is a silly, fun musical rom-com so one shouldn't expect too much from it. However, it still lacks in a few areas and could have been much better with a bit of work, therefore it only rates three stars.

The Mark of the Renegade (1951)

Synopsis: A man, branded a renegade, is blackmailed into wooing the daughter of an influential man, but when he starts to fall for her for real it complicates everything.

Rating: 5/5

Reason: While not a perfect film, it's the perfect film for me. It has everything I love and is entertaining start to finish.

Sombrero (1953)

Synopsis: Three men fall in love with women they cannot marry, each one attempts to resolve this issue differently with varying degrees of success.

Rating: 4/5

Reason: This movie is strangely moving and strangely strange at various points. Some things are glossed over that should have been explored in more detail, and this most certainly isn't a rom-com. All the same it's a great and thoughtful movie that left me thinking about its themes for days afterward.

Latin Lovers (1953)

Synopsis: A wealthy heiress falls for a man in Brazil, but she’s uncertain if he loves her or her money.

Rating: 2/5

Reason: This movie is pure fantasy and ends up particularly shallow because of it. The story is paper thin and stereotypes abound. While entertaining enough it's not a good movie.

A Life in the Balance (1955)

Synopsis: A little boy is in the clutches of a serial murderer and his father is helpless to save him.

Rating: 4/5

Reason: This movie keeps the suspense going the entire time. The little boy is perfectly cast and the twists never stop coming. Unfortunately the film chokes at the end and becomes a ham fisted morality tale, but until then it's a beautiful piece of suspense film.

Let No Man Write My Epitaph (1960)

Synopsis: A small family of misfits comes together to support the rearing of a young boy in the Chicago slums, but when one man with nefarious purposes enters the mix everything comes crashing down.

Rating: 5/5

Reason: This bleak movie is excellent from start to finish. It's not a happy movie by any stretch, not even a little bit, but it's a thought provoking look at the human condition, poverty, crime and trying to raise a child in hard conditions. A stirring film and well acted by all.
