Dear Old Dartmouth
So some of you may have heard about the protests at Dartmouth and the subsequent reactions. It's all over ABC, Fox News, and Huff Po now so there's really no point in ignoring it. So the problem I have with everything is quite simple. it's the problem I have with everything. People have no idea how to chill the fuck out.
Look, Dartmouth does have a problem. There's definitely racism, homophobia, sexism, classism, and a frighteningly large amount of unaddressed sexual assaults. So does the rest of the world. It's not like these are Dartmouth specific problems. It's not like Dartmouth has institutionalized racism, homophobia, sexism, classism, etc. It's the people in campus. You know how you're NOT gonna reach them? Pissing off half of campus. I think the one thing that Dartmouth really needs to get better out of the primary concerns is addressing sexual assault. But in the end, I don't think the protest was the best way to go about it. I don't think comparing yourself to MLK and the civil rights movement is proper or does justice to the brave men and women of the civil rights movement. I don't think it's fair that the administration is taking no action to punish the protesters at all after they assaulted a student, trespassed, and broke hella rules and laws.
The most ridiculous thing I've seen is people taking the comments on Bored@Baker seriously. Bored@Baker is like Dartmouth's 4chan. If you really are crediting that as a legitimate gauge of campus climate, then you have no right to report on what is going on on our campus. Finally, the worst people in this whole situation are the people who are threatening the protesters. I don't agree with the protesters' methods and I still lol every time i remember the sign that said that Dartmouth supports capitalism (no shit), but sending death and sexual assault threats? How stupid do you have to be? That's basically saying, "You are so wrong, and to prove you're wrong, I'm going to prove you right!" I just don't understand. YOU are what's wrong with campus. You're scum. You are the reason we had to deal with the protesters.
This campus needs Jesus. And to chill the fuck out.
