Pairing: Fem!reader x Gwilym lee
Summary: Just some self-indulgent fluff with Gwil since I was feeling lonely and productive at the same time
Warnings: None? Idk it´s just fluff.
A/N: Gwil needs more love and I´m going to contribute to that. We love that tall tree man and he deserves more attention.
Word count: 1573
“Bubs, are you done yet?”, you asked from your position just outside your kitchen/dining room. Gwilym had told you to put on some nice clothes for dinner, but when you came down the stairs he immediately rushed you outside, claiming you were going to ruin the surprise. You normally didn´t like surprises, but Gwilym knew you well enough to plan something that you would like. Or at least he should know after spending the past three years with you. Half of which you had even lived together.
“Two seconds, darling”, he called out, making a smile tug at your lips. You would never get tired of hearing him call you that. You joked he only started doing it after filming Bohemian Rhapsody, but he claimed he had done it well before that. He definitely hadn´t. But you didn’t mind. It was cute.
Gwilym poked his head around the corner, a huge smile on his lips along with something else. Nervousness?
“It´s all done”, he said with a smile, offering his hand. His eyes raked all over your body, taking in the nice dress you had put on. The one he loved so much because it hugged all your curves. “You look lovely, darling”
“Thank you, Gwil”, you said. You closed the distance between you and stood on your tip-topes to press your lips to his. You could feel him instantly relax at your presence, his hands reaching out to grab your waist.
You pulled away with a stupid smile on your face, your eyes taking in your boyfriend. Gwilym was dressed in his best navy trousers, the ones that fit him like a glove. He had also put on a white button down that he had rolled up his sleeves. His chest hair was on show as he had left a few of the top buttons open.
“Looking very handsome, my love”, you smiled. A blush crept up to his cheeks.
“Thank you, Y/N. Are you hungry?”, Gwilym asked, grabbing your hands and pulling you into the dining room.
He had dimmed the light and lit a few candles all around the room. The table was decorated to the max, making you think he had definitely got some help. Gwilym was a man of many talents, but table décor was not one of them.
There was a fresh bouquet of roses on the middle of the table along with two plates of something that looked like his mom´s chicken parmesan. Your favorite. In addition, there was a bottle of white wine cooling in a bucket next to the table.
“Do you like it?”, Gwilym asked. He was almost bouncing on his feet like a little kid.
“I love it, Gwil”, you said, leaning in to give him another kiss.
Gwilym pulled out your chair for you like the gentleman he was before pouring you a glass of wine.
“So, what did I do to deserve this?”, you asked, taking a bite of the chicken. He hadn´t gotten it exactly right, but he tried. And that´s what mattered.
“I just wanted to surprise you”, Gwilym said, “But there is one thing I-”
He ran his hand through his hair, a thing he only did when he was nervous. You narrowed your eyes. What was going on?
“Never mind. Let´s eat first, ok?”
“Sure. Is everything alright?”, you asked.
“Yeah, everything is perfect actually. Tell me about your day, darling. How was work?”, Gwilym asked. Your concern went out the window as you started talking. Gwilym relaxed at the sound of your voice. Almost as if you were distracting him.
It was nice just having an evening for the two of you. With all the interview and press stuff, you had missed having Gwilym to yourself. Of course, you had him at night in bed, but you were both usually busy in the evenings. And it was certainly nice to have a date night. Especially since it was in the comfort on your own home, so you could have dessert wherever you wanted.
Apparently Gwilym had other plans though, because he brought out a tray of chocolate covered strawberries after you had both finished dinner. That man certainly knew the way to your heart.
“Ok enough. You have to tell me what´s bothering you, my love”, you said, looking at the way Gwilym would rub his beard. He did it way more than usual.
“Nothing is bothering me, darling”, Gwilym laughed. He reached out to grab you hand across the table, running his fingers over your knuckles. His deep blue eyes staring into yours, making the butterflies in your stomach go into a frenzy.
“Then what is it?”, you asked.
Gwilym rolled his eyes.
“You´re always so impatient, Y/N. But fine, I´ll tell you. So, I´ve been thinking a lot lately. About us”, he said.
“Wait are you breaking up with me?”, you asked, pulling your hand away. Your eyes wide.
“What? No!”, Gwilym said. He reached into his pocket and grabbed a square velvet box. Wait. Was that?
He stood up and walked over to you in one long step. Oh my god he was doing it. Gwilym kept eye contact with you as he sank down on one knee, one hand holding the box and the other grabbing your hand.
“Y/N. Darling. I´ve been thinking about us and how much I love you. Every day with you makes me so happy. You make me happy. I love you more with every smile, every giggle, every kiss. I don´t want to live in a world where I´m not able to wake up next to you and feel your soft skin against mine. I love your jokes, how cute you are when you get angry, your little snores when you sleep. I love you. All of you. And I can´t picture myself doing anything else but being with you for the rest of my life. I want to grow old with you. Have tons of babies with you”, Gwilym said, his voice almost cracking at the end. His eyes tearing up.
Yours were already gone for. Tears were flowing down your cheeks as you smiled uncontrollably. Your heart felt like it was about to swell out of your chest.
“You´re even beautiful when you cry, darling”, he said, reaching up to wipe your cheeks. Not that it helped. Fresh tears replaced the ones he dried immediately.
“So, will you do me the absolute honor of becoming my wife, Y/N? To be mine? Forever?”, Gwilym asked. He opened the box and looked up at you. And you couldn´t even care less about what was inside it, all you wanted was to smother Gwilym in kisses, so that´s what you did.
You sank to the floor in front of him and threw your arms around his shoulders, letting your tears stain the material of his shirt. He held you close, his lips pressing against your head.
“Are those happy tears, darling? You haven´t answered me yet”, he said, pulling you away just enough to look into your eyes. He grabbed your face in his hands and wiped your tears with his thumbs. You melted into his touch.
“Of course I´ll marry you, my love”, you said. Gwilym gave you the biggest, brightest, smile you´ve ever seen before pressing his lips to yours. The kiss was slow, passionate. Both of you pouring all your love into it.
You giggled when you finally pulled away, reaching out to wipe the tear that had escaped Gwilym´s eye.
“Don´t you want to see the ring?”, he asked, lifting the box. Inside was a beautiful, simple, diamond ring. The band was delicate. It was perfect. Of course it was. He knew you.
“Gwil I-I don´t know what to say. It´s perfect”, you said, blinking away a couple of tears. Gwilym grabbed the ring from the box and opened his hand so you could place yours in it. He slowly slid the ring onto your finger, leaning down and pressing his lips to it once it was in place. It felt perfect. You were officially his.
“I can´t wait to show the world my fiancée”, Gwilym smiled, grabbing your hands and helping you to your feet. He wrapped his arms around you and held you close.
Finaceé. That was nice. You could get used to that.
“I can´t wait to call you my husband, Gwil”, you said, leaning up to give him another kiss. “But just for the record, we´re not having tons of babies”
Gwilym threw his head back as he laughed. God he was even more gorgeous when he did that. You couldn´t help the smile of admiration that spread over your lips.
“I´ll settle for a few if it´s with you, darling”, he said.
“Good. A few is good”, you said, a playful smirk playing on your lips, “Want to practice?”
“Definitely”, Gwilym said, pulling you flush against your body and crashing his lips against yours.
Mrs. Lee. You could get used to that.

Roger groaned into the pillow, cracking one eye open to find only the chill darkness of his bedroom. He reached over and grabbed his phone from the nightstand, swiping a finger across the screen. It was barely 3am.
“Bloody hell,” he muttered to himself. He’d hoped he would make it until daybreak. This time he’d slept only a few hours. The night before had only been marginally better.
He flopped back into bed, swiping through to access the calendar on his phone. There, in stark white against a black background was the appointment for his audition for a new band. “5:30,” he spoke in the quiet. “I’ll feel bloody awful with no sleep,” he said to no one.
And you’ll play awful, too, a little voice within him whispered. But that was just the beginning of his doubts, as a tidal wave of anxieties began to assault him from all directions…insecurities about his drumming, his intellect, even his looks. He pressed his palms against his ears to will them quiet before swinging his legs over the side of the bed.
Getting up would help. It always did. He could never rest in bed unless he was sleeping. He had to be moving. Always had to be moving.
Roger padded to the bathroom, then to the kitchen to get a glass of water. On the counter lay his bag from the pharmacy. He frowned at it, then headed into the living room where he sagged against the couch where he drifted into a fitful sleep.
When he woke up, it was half past nine, and he was late for art appreciation. He hurriedly scooped up his things and ran off to class.
The school day passed in a whirlwind…a dizzying array of lecture after lecture that left Roger drained and no less informed. He had trouble concentrating, and the lack of sleep only made things worse.
Before he realized it, it was nearing 5:30 and he was both wired from anxiety and dead on his feet. He popped into an on campus coffee shop for a quick shot of caffeine, hoping it would equalize him somewhat.
That bitter liquid made him jittery, but gave him the energy he needed to hold his eyes open. He tossed the cup and made his way over to the rehearsal hall where the auditions would be held.
He stood in front of the large double doors, his sticks in his back pocket. A cold sweat sprang out over his entire body, and he could feel a blush creep up his chest. It became harder to breathe, and he began to pray to God or whoever was listening “not now, please not now” as he felt the tell-tale signs of a panic attack. He closed his eyes and reminded himself that he would be playing soon, and playing music was the only thing that ever truly helped.
The double doors opened, cool air dusting his overheated skin. A tall, curly-haired man greeted him, a kind smile on his face. “Hi mate. You must be here to audition.”
Roger still couldn’t speak, so he just held up his sticks, a wry grin on his face. He’d gotten very good at faking it over the years.
“Come on in then…meet the boys.” The man gestured him inside the small auditorium space, and Roger’s eyes immediately settled on the very nice drumset setup…the drumset he would soon be playing. His throat began to relax.
“I’m Brian, by the way. And this is John and Freddie.”
Roger turned around, surveying the remaining men. They were all…beautiful. He wished he had another word for them, but it was true. It was as if they had all been grown on some freakishly experimental farm where only amazingly good looking people are produced. He felt sorely out of place.
“Roger,” he half croaked. “My name’s Roger.”
“Lovely,” one of them spoke. He had the blackest hair Roger had ever seen, and it shined like a mirror. “How long have you been drumming, darling?”
Roger stood a little straighter. “Since I was a kid.”
The other man, Roger believed his name was John, the one with the long brown hair and cute bum (yes, he’d looked), smiled at him sweetly. “Let’s see what you’ve got Roger.”
Without another word, Roger crossed to the drumset, settling behind it. Instantly, all of his anxieties melted away. A peace fell over him, and for a moment he felt like the only person in the room. He set about tuning the drums.
Brian frowned at him. “What are you doing?”
Roger looked at him curiously. “Tuning them? They’re really out mate. Have people been playing them like this all day?”
Brian looked at the others with an interesting expression, and then simply watched Roger as he made quick work of tuning the drums. Then he began his audition.
Roger quickly became lost in the music, lost in the way his body became an instrument to produce sound, how he could feel the vibrations of the drums through his hands, reverberating in his ears...with his lightning fast rhythms he created a wall of sound rising through the small auditorium that left the three men watching a little breathless.
Roger finished his solo, holding up his sticks and finally realizing he was back in the auditorium space. He’d been so lost in the music he’d forgotten himself for a moment. He looked up to see Brian, John, and Freddie staring at him, a bit of wonder on their faces.
Instantly, Roger became anxious. Was that good enough? Did he make a mistake? How did it even sound? The old insecurities came rushing back, self-doubt and anxiety a trusted friend that would never leave him.
Brian cleared his throat, interrupting his racing thoughts.
“Thank you Roger. Can we uh…have a few moments alone?”
Roger paled. “Yeah, sure,” he said quickly. That’s it you really fucked it up you really blew it “I’ll just be outside,” he said to the three of them.
He slid down the wall to sit on the floor, his knees pulled up to his chest. He needed a cigarette, but he was certain he couldn’t smoke inside the building. He began thinking about what he would do when he went home. Go to bed, his inner voice supplied. Go to bed and forget this day ever happened. Roger agreed.
Roger sat for a few more moments before the door to the auditorium hall opened and John poked his head out. He smiled sweetly, and Roger noticed for the first time he had a cute little tooth gap. No use noticing now, he thought. I’ll never see any of these chaps again.
He walked in with his sticks in his hand, facing the three of them. He shuffled his feet a bit, suddenly interested in the toes of his sparkly Converse.
“Welcome to Queen,” Freddie said dramatically.
Roger’s head shot up, and he blinked a few times, not understanding.
Brian laughed. “You’re in. We love you. Now let’s go to the pub and celebrate.”
---
Roger didn’t really do public places well, but he went along with his new friends because it was really important to him that he didn’t disappoint them. So he sat in a booth at the Lucky Horseshoe nursing a beer and hedging questions about himself.
“What are you studying,” John asked. His hair was more of a golden brown than a dark brown, and Roger wanted to run his fingers through it. “Um, Biology,” he said a little tight-lipped.
“Do you like it?”
Roger shrugged. He really hated himself, how boring he was. Maybe if he drank some more beer he could be engaging like Freddie, Freddie with the beautiful kohl-lined eyes who was laughing, high and sweet. Or maybe he could be charming like Brian, with the lustrous curls and pretty hands who was talking about the stars. God, he was boring as hell.
“It’s ok,” he elaborated, but not by much. Come on Rog…try. “I um, wanted to be a dentist, but that didn’t work out.”
John smiled at him, and something warm spooled in his gut. “And why is that love?”
Roger found himself smiling back. “Too many maths.”
Brian overheard him, and placed a hand on his arm. Where he touched him was warm and a bit rough…Roger could feel the callouses where Brian played the guitar, and it sent a thrill through him. He shifted a bit in his seat.
“Love, if you need help with maths, all you have to do is ask,” Brian said sweetly. He smelled of beer and of something uniquely him, like cinnamon and earth.
Freddie smiled, his toothy grin stretching over his soft plum lips. “Brian here is our resident genius.” Freddie teased a finger over Brian’s thin arm, rubbing it softly, and Roger’s mouth fell open. “Our little astrophysicist.”
Roger swallowed. Could they be together? The thought sent him spiraling. They certainly would make a beautiful couple. A pang of jealousy shot through him. Why couldn’t he ever get someone to love him like that?
Because you’re ugly.
His eyes welled with tears, but he hid them behind his mug of beer.
Brian grabbed Freddie’s hand, playfully toying with his fingers. “Not yet, darling. But one day. Besides, what would I do without my artist and my engineer?”
John grinned widely, falling into Freddie as he rested his head on his shoulder. He nuzzled him softly and then planted a soft kiss on his cheek. Roger gasped quietly, eyes wide. He had it wrong. They all were together.
And you’re the odd man out.
Roger clenched his fist to keep the intrusive thoughts at bay, but more often than not, they won.
Freddie nuzzled John back, his eyes locking on Roger. “So you got tired of dentistry dear…I don’t blame you. So what do you plan to do with your degree?”
Roger’s hand tightened on his mug. “I uh, haven’t decided.”
Brian touched him again, this time on the shoulder, and a shiver went through him. “There’s nothing wrong with that love. You’ve got plenty of time.”
John tipped his mug until it was empty. “Well you’re one hell of a drummer,” John said a little drunkenly. “You could always do that.”
Roger blushed, looking down like he always did whenever anyone complimented him.
Freddie playfully slapped John on the arm. “You’ve gone and embarrassed him now Deaky. And he’s so pretty when he blushes.”
You look like a tomato when you blush.
“You don’t have to say that,” Roger said hurriedly.
Freddie just blinked. “Say what dear? That you’re attractive? I bloody well might. You’re fucking gorgeous.”
“Freddie—“ Brian began.
“No, Brian…looks like our friend here might need to hear it.”
Roger wished the pub floor would open up and take him into hell. His face was burning, and tears were threatening to spill down his cheeks.
Freddie reached across the table and tipped his chin up. “Roger, darling. Look at me.”
Roger managed to look up, his lip trembling.
“You know how beautiful you are? Hmm? And I’m not talking about just on the outside, darling, but on the inside too. I know we just met but I can tell you’re a good person.”
Roger couldn’t stop the tears from flowing hotly down his face, and Freddie wiped them with his thumb. He sniffed miserably, trying to keep his head up under Freddie’s gaze.
“I think you’re beautiful,” John added, his little tooth gap flashing.
“So do I,” Brian said, warm calloused fingers wrapping around his arm.
No intrusive thoughts opposed.
---
The next day Roger couldn’t get out of bed. It’s not that he didn’t want to; he knew he had school, and he needed to eat and shower and he had band practice, but a heavy blackness had settled over him, sucking his energy and will to do anything other than sleep. So that’s what he did.
Until a knock came at the door. Several knocks, actually, and since the door was unlocked, they came right in.
Freddie, John and Brian entered Roger’s flat with worried expressions on their faces. When Roger refused to return their calls and messages, they decided to go check on him where they had dropped him off from the pub the night before. But as they entered the flat, all was quiet.
The flat was a little messy, with clothes strewn about the living room. There were no dishes in the sink, however suggesting Roger hadn’t been eating properly. And there was a bag of medicine from a week ago that hadn’t been touched.
“Found him!” Freddie cried out from a back bedroom as he stood over Roger’s sleeping form. He had the covers pulled up tight, and his blond hair was messily spread over the pillow.
Brian stood over Roger, shaking him gently. “Roger…Roger…it’s us. Are you ok?”
“Leave me alone,” Roger grumbled. “I just want to sleep.”
John came in with the bag of medicine. “Are you supposed to be taking these pills Roger? They were filled a week ago.”
Roger focused on the young man holding his bag of medicine, and he became suddenly angry. “Fuck off!” he cried out. “I didn’t ask for you to be in my personal business like this!”
Brian soothed the hair back from his forehead, the seething, spitting Roger shrinking back from his touch.
“Ah, love you are our business now. You’re in our circle. We care about you whether you like it or not. Now let’s get you sat up so you can have a bit of food, yeah?”
Roger scowled at him. “I don’t want anything, Brian. I don’t want you here. I just want to be left alone.”
John sat down on the edge of the bed. “I know you do. But that’s not what you need right now.”
Roger crossed his arms, looking at John defiantly. “And how do you know what I need?”
John looked at him sympathetically. “Because these prescriptions are for anxiety and depression love, and being alone only makes those worse.”
Brian leaned over and kissed his head, and Roger’s frown dissipated, his face going lax under Brian’s gentle touch.
Freddie had disappeared into the kitchen and returned with a sandwich and some juice, and he set it on a tray over Roger’s lap. He kissed him on the cheek. “When you’re feeling better, we’ll go out properly, but for right now, this is a start. Eat all of it darling. It was made with love.”
John stepped forward with a pill bottle. “And after your sandwich, you’re gonna take this medicine. And you’ll do the same thing every day. Eat. Take medicine. Repeat.”
Roger looked up, his eyes large. “Why are you doing this?”
Freddie smiled. “Because you’re one of us now darling.” He moved to put an arm around John and Brian, pulling them close. “And we always take care of our own.”

Freddie slipped into the old t-shirt, letting the hem skim just below the waist of his worn jeans. He had been asleep all day, the moon was out, and he was hungry.
It was feeding time.
He tied back his medium-length hair, letting his black-painted nails flick expertly over the hair tie until his ebony locks were secured at the base of his neck in a low ponytail. He checked himself in the mirror, his gaunt face pale, dark circles under his eyes.
It was a myth that vampires couldn’t see their reflection. They were doomed to reflect on their cursed existence for all eternity.
Freddie grabbed his bag, opened his second story window and jumped, landing as gracefully as a cat before slinking off into the woods behind his home. It was time to hunt.
Brian watched the small herd of deer as they slept in the meadow, making notes in his journal. He had tracked the migratory habits of this particular herd across England and, as a scientist for Cambridge’s animal research department, felt most at home camping in a glen, squinting through binoculars at Mother Nature.
The meadow was quiet. The deer were munching contentedly on sweet grass, and a baby fawn nuzzled its mother, suckling gently. Brian smiled, taking more notes and jotting down the time. These deer were feeding late, which was notable but not unusual. It was the near winter, and the deer felt the season’s call to fatten up.
Unbeknownst to Brian, someone else watched the deer.
Freddie crouched in a thicket of berries, not fifteen feet from the feeding deer. He could smell the warm blood coursing through bodies, could hear their rapid heartbeats as they grazed in the meadow. The deer were totally oblivious to Freddie, though. Since his change, he had lost all human smell, making him the perfect hunter.
One of the deer had a fawn with her, and he frowned. He wouldn’t take the mother or the baby. There was another deer there, a young buck. Let him get a little closer, Freddie thought. His mouth began to water, and his eyes glowed as green as the meadow, the pupils sharpening to slits. Just a little closer. A sharp cramp in his stomach nearly doubled him over, but he never lost his focus as the young buck moved into his field of vision.
Brian watched through the binoculars as the young buck bowed his head to eat from the cool grass of the meadow. One moment he was munching the grass, and the next, two marble hands were wrapped around his horns, twisting his neck with a quick, efficient snap.
Brian cried out, dropping the binoculars as he rose from his hiding place. Through the fog he saw a dark head bent to the tender neck.
Freddie heard the footsteps approaching, but his hunger wouldn’t listen. His hunger, hundreds of years old and stubborn, said feed, so he fed on the little deer until it had nothing more to give. Just as the footsteps reached him, he withdrew, fangs still out and dripping down his shirt to turn and look at the intruder.
It was a man. A young man with curly hair. The man’s heart was beating so fast; he could hear it. He could smell it.
The deer had been small, the man had interrupted him, and he was still hungry.
He launched himself at Brian, knocking him to the ground and straddling him in an instant. They tussled in the fog for a moment before Freddie had an arm against Brian’s throat.
“What are you doing in my meadow?” he hissed. Blood spattered from his lips, and his fangs were still out.
Brian stared up at him in horror. “I…I’m watching the deer.” He finally managed.
Freddie turned his head, his green glowing eyes narrowing as if to better understand the odd man.
“To steal them?”
Brian shook his head. “No! To just…watch them. For science.”
Freddie ran his tongue over his outstretched fangs, lapping the dripping blood there, and smiled. “So you’re not a thief.”
Brian barked out a laugh, despite his compromising position. “Of course not. I…I didn’t know this was your meadow.” He looked into Freddie’s glowing eyes. “I’m sorry.”
Freddie’s mouth watered at the smell coming from the man beneath him…the blood pulsing in his neck, the soft warm skin against his arm and the unique musk of the man’s human scent...earthy and spicy; it awakened something within him that was far quicker than hunger. It was sharper, more distinct.
Freddie blinked, and his eyes no longer glowed.
Brian quivered a little beneath him. “Are you going to kill me?” He said quietly.
Freddie licked his lips, then drew in his fangs. “No, of course not darling.” He swallowed. “I don’t do that anymore.” He stood, dusting off his shirt, then helped Brian to his feet. “That’s why I hunt.”
Brian just looked at him a moment, rubbing his throat absently. “Well what—
Freddie just laughed. “Not what darling, who. ‘What’ is just rude. My name is Freddie. Freddie Mercury.”
Brian looked down at the hand extended to him, and hesitantly took it. The skin was smooth and cool, the nails painted black.
“Why don’t you come back to my house love? I can get cleaned up and we can have some tea. You’ve had quite the fright after all.”
Brian found himself nodding at the bloodstained face, wanting to know more this man and what (or who) he was. Maybe it was the scientist in him, but he was more curious than afraid.
Brian sat in a homey living room, a cozy fire blazing in the hearth. The man had left him to go upstairs for a moment, presumably to go wash up, and Brian surveyed his surroundings.
The cottage was spacious and well apportioned…rustic modern. Freddie had taste, and the few antique pieces he had strewn about the open-design living space spoke of life and history. Brian found himself leaning over a vase as Freddie came down the stairs in a patterned red jacket and cream-colored blouse opened at the neck. He wore a series of cords doubled around his pale throat, and Brian’s eyes were drawn to them.
“You like these?” Freddie said smoothly as he fingered the charms that hung around his neck. “The moon and stars. Picked them up in Dubai. They’re supposed to be talismans, in case I’m ever lost.” Freddie’s eyes, brown now and warm with knowing, flashed softly at Brian. “The moon and stars are my eternal friends, after all,” he said with a soft smile.
Brian’s mouth quirked, his eyes flitting up to rest on Freddie’s face. It was smooth, frozen in the bloom of youth. It couldn’t have been more than—“
“How old are you,” Brian asked, his curiosity getting the better of him.
Freddie straightened his coat. “23.”
Brian huffed a little laugh. “Is that really all?”
Freddie eyed him sharply. “Why? Does the real answer affect whether you take tea with me or not?” Freddie was already walking to the kitchen area, withdrawing a beautiful china teapot with gold leafing.
“No,” Brian exhaled. “I just…want to know more about you, that’s all.”
Freddie smiled. “For science?”
“No,” Brian said, meeting Freddie’s brown eyes in the warm light. “For myself.”
The kettle burbled. Brian settled on the couch, and Freddie served him biscuits. “I made these myself,” he said with some measure of pride.
Brian looked at them with some trepidation.
Freddie giggled. “Go on, darling. If I wanted to kill you, you would’ve been long dead by now.” He took a biscuit and put it to Brian’s lips. “Take a bite,” he said, just the point of one of his fangs teasing its way into view.
Brian savored the lemon ginger biscuit as the kettle screamed, unable to hold back the pleased little hum at the taste. Freddie was back in a flash, two steaming cups of tea in those delicate cups and set them on the coffee table.
“You did that very fast,” Brian said around a mouthful of biscuit. “Come to think of it, you cleaned up pretty fast, too. Is that part of –“
“Being a vampire?” Freddie flashed his fangs when he smiled.
Brian swallowed, taking a sip of tea.
“Is that what you are?”
Freddie crossed his legs, and again Brian was struck with his ethereal beauty, the grace with which he held himself.
“If the legends are to be believed, then I’m a vampire. I feed on blood to survive.”
Brian nodded. “How would you describe yourself, then?”
Freddie put a hand under his chin, his eyes slipping closed. “A man who is striving to be better.”
Brian found it a very thoughtful answer, almost philosophical. “That’s why you hunt animals.”
Freddie nodded, smiling. “I am sorry I have to do it…but I have to feed my hunger. Believe me, I’ve tried to fast. The results were…not pretty.”
Brian held up a biscuit. “Can you eat food?”
Freddie smiled, his cute overbite showing instead of his fangs. “Oh yes. But it doesn’t satisfy me. I can eat for pleasure though. For taste.” He sipped his tea as if to convince Brian of the fact. “But it doesn’t fill me. Nothing does except blood.”
Unbeknownst to him, Brian was frowning. To have to live that way for who knows how many years…denying your true self…
“How old are you, Freddie?”
Freddie looked sad for a moment. “I’ve walked this earth for 407 years,” he finally said.
Brian’s small intake of breath was loud in the open room, and he promptly clamped his mouth shut.
“Do you mind if I ask you a few questions?” Brian said softly. “I don’t want to pry. I just find you fascinating, Freddie. And not as a creature to study in the woods, but as a person.”
Freddie blinked, his eyes curiously red. “Go ahead Brian. Ask me anything.”
Brian relaxed a bit on the sofa. “Why don’t you enjoy being a vampire?”
Freddie sipped his tea. “I reject killing to live. I stopped taking human lives over 200 years ago. I’ve been subsisting on animal blood ever since. It’s a viable substitute, but it’s also why my skin has such a pallor to it, and why I don’t have a lot of energy. I also have to feed more often than I would if I fed on humans.”
Brian nodded. “I find that very respectable. So you hope to regain your humanity?”
Freddie smiled. “That’s impossible, I’m afraid. But by honoring that little bit that resides within me, I feel that I can hold on to what I have left.”
Brian shifted on the couch. “What if…you were to feed on a human without killing them? Wouldn’t that sustain you more than an animal’s blood?”
Freddie shook his head vigorously. “Too risky. I might take too much. And it would still be against their will.”
Brian bit his lip. “What if it were consensual?” He nervously fingered his teacup. “I mean, what if the human were to consent to being bitten? Would you do it then?”
Freddie’s eyes narrowed, and his senses picked up on that sweet smell again…not just of Brian’s blood, but of his natural scent, and his instincts prickled.
“What are you saying Brian?”
Brian waffled a bit, pushing a hand through his dark curls. “I’m saying that maybe, since our misunderstanding in the meadow, that you could drink from me.”
Saliva filled Freddie’s mouth at the mere thought of piercing that tender neck, and he swallowed it down, shaking his head firmly. “No, Brian. Thank you, but that will not be necessary.”
Brian frowned a little, his eyes growing dark. “What if I want you to?”
“You…you want me to?”
Brian set his teacup down and crossed over to where Freddie was sitting. He sat beside him, his shoulder flush with his. “Yes,” he said softly. “I want you to drink from me Freddie.” He let his hand go up to lightly brush the open collar of Freddie’s shirt, then drift down to clutch a cool hand. “Please.”
Freddie swallowed, trousers tight at the proximity of the man, instincts screaming Drink! as he fought a private war with himself. He locked eyes with Brian, noticing for the first time the warm hazel, clear like a mountain stream.
“You know what this would mean, Brian. Your life would be in my hands. I could lose control; I could take too much.”
Brian stroked his face, leaving Freddie shivering despite his permanent chill. “You won’t,” Brian soothed him. “You’ll take just enough to help you.” Those hazel eyes looked up at him again. “Please, let me help you.”
Freddie licked his lips, the persistent hunger rising to an incredible ache. There was arousal too, under the surface of the hunger, springing to life. He wanted Brian, and not just as a meal. He leaned forward, brushing Brian’s hair away from his face and pressed his lips to Brian’s. He felt the man shiver and moan, his arms going around him, easily relaxing into the kiss.
Brian nipped his way inside of Freddie’s mouth, need leading the way as he captured the man’s velvety lips, wondering what they would feel like on his neck as they were draining the life out of him. He nicked himself on one of Fredde’s fangs, drawing blood, and a low, rumbling growl came from Freddie, sending a bubble of excitement through Brian.
Freddie pulled him away, tasting the blood on his lips. His eyes were meadow-green and glowing, and his fangs were fully extended…but Brian wasn’t afraid.
Freddie gingerly braced a hand on his shoulder and bared his neck. He mouthed it slowly, wetting it with his tongue and lips until Brian could feel the scrape of his fangs of his jugular vein. The sensation went straight to his cock, leaving him a panting, sweating mess.
“Take me Freddie,” he nearly mewled, “I know you need it.”
Freddie just sat, entranced, watching the throbbing skin of Brian’s stretched skin.
“Go on lover. Do it!”
With a final lick, Freddie sank into the buttery warm softness of Brian’s neck. The sweat warmth of his blood hit his palate immediately, and he groaned and fluttered his eyes as he sucked him down, caressing him the entire time.
Brian had never felt ecstasy like this before. From the moment Freddie pierced his skin, the pinch and pain brought so much pleasure, ratcheting up his spine like an orgasm that never released him from its grip. He could feel himself grow lightheaded as the blood rushed from his body...could hear the pleasured groans from Freddie, but he was helpless to do anything but to clutch on to him, even as his hold grew weaker and weaker…
Freddie finally released him, and Brian, now pale and unconscious, sagged in his arms. Freddie promptly carried him upstairs, tucking him under the satin sheets of his large bed.
Morning came without incident. Brian woke up in the bed alone, a glass of orange juice and a cream cheese bagel beside the bed. There was a note on the tray in elegant script. “Eat. Drink. It will help you get your strength back. And please visit my little meadow again soon. You are always welcome. P.s. Follow the moon and stars; they will help you find your way.”
Brian felt at his throat, and there was Freddie’s necklace, cleverly hiding two neat puncture wounds on his neck. He smiled.

Brian sulked in the corner, stirring his Shirley Temple with the little cocktail straw, a deep frown on his face. He took another hors d'oeuvre from a passing tray, hoping the bite of food would improve his mood.
But it didn’t. It only made him feel fatter, more glum. The baby kicked happily at the new morsel, pounding his ribs. He pulled his blazer closed over his generous bump, but to no avail; it hadn’t fit properly in months.
He should’ve never come to the birthday party, but it was a corporate affair…one of those posh things that was an understood necessity. His boss had even hired a band and a photographer. Brian sniffed. The audacity.
Brian eyed the latter as he flitted around the perimeter of the party, snapping both candid and posed shots. The photographer was a striking man, with glossy, shoulder-length hair, full lips, and a dashing sense of style. He seemed to enjoy his job, laughing and talking with the people he snapped photos with. A charming bloke.
Brian stuffed another morsel in his mouth, his shoulders hunched. Absently, he rubbed a hand over his belly and sighed. Not long now and he could slip out unnoticed…be back at his flat under the covers, his swollen feet freed from their shiny shoes. Not long now…
The click of a camera’s flash jolted him from his revelry. “Bloody hell!” he muttered, shielding his eyes.
“Surprise, darling!” The photographer from earlier said as he smiled widely. He really had an adorable smile. Brian’s throat constricted.
Brian frowned. “You really shouldn’t do that, you know. Not without people’s permission.”
The photographer’s mouth turned down a bit, his stunning brown eyes wide and soft. “Well I’m sorry love, but I’m supposed to get a few candids of all the guests.” The camera went up to the man’s face again. “Now pose for me beautiful.”
Brian put his hands up. “Absolutely not,” Brian said as he struggled to get up. “And I am certainly not beautiful.”
The photographer’s mouth flew open as he rushed to help Brian to his feet. “Darling, you are! You’re positively stunning! Pose for me for a few shots and I’ll show you!”
Tears stung Brian’s eyes. He was tired, his feet hurt, and he had no time for this empty praise. Brian had met people like this charmer, and they were always full of pretty, empty words.
Brian shook his head, his full head of brown curls bouncing around his face. “Go shoot someone else,” he fussed. “I’m tired, I’m fat, I’m cranky, and in case you didn’t notice I’m very pregnant.”
The photographer smiled softly. “Darling, I noticed.” He lay a hand on his shoulder. “Please?”
And there was such earnestness in his eyes, he let him.
“I’m Freddie, by the way.” A delicate hand went out to take Brian’s. “Freddie Mercury.”
“Brian May,” Brian muttered as he gave him his hand.
Freddie brought it to his lips and pressed a small kiss there. He smiled. “Pleasure to meet you Brian.”
Brian’s mouth fell open a little, but he managed a small smile in return.
“Stand against the wall there Brian, just for a moment, then we’ll get you off your feet. Now hold your belly…that’s it. Look down for me?” Freddie snapped a few photos at various angles, moving around Brian’s body.
Then he bade him sit down. He sat across him at the table and snapped a few more. The band had kicked up now, playing a variety of songs, and the dancefloor was filling up. Freddie looked through the photos on his camera while Brian sipped on his Shirley Temple. He stood, leaning over Brian to show him the shots.
Brian thrilled a little at the proximity of the man. He smelled terrific…like spice and vanilla, and his warm breath feathered Brian’s hair. He balanced himself with one hand placed on Brian’s shoulder while the other hand held the camera. Freddie cycled through the shots.
They were…lovely. Black and white shots of Brian’s hands on his bump, shots of Brian in profile, in the candlelight from the table, a profile of him against the greenery of the wall, looking serene and nowhere near as miserable as he felt. A close-up shot of Brian’s bump, like an eclipse, cresting the frame of the photo.
So Freddie was an excellent photographer.
Freddie turned his face, and it was inches from Brian’s. “See darling? See how beautiful you are?”
Brian swallowed. “I think you’re just a good photographer.”
Freddie took his arm from around his shoulders, straightening a little. The music swelled in his ears, and he put his camera in his equipment bag and held out his hand.
“May I have this dance?”
Brian stared up at him, not believing what he was hearing. “Don’t you…um, don’t you have to work?”
Freddie shrugged. “I haven’t taken my break yet. It’s high time I did. What do you say, Mr. May. You and the little one want to hit the dance floor?”
Brian pursed his lips, looking away.
“Not too much my dear. I know you’re tired. But have a little fun before you go, yeah?”
Brian smiled in spite of himself, and took the hand offered him.
Freddie helped him to his feet, and Brian followed him as gracefully as he could to the dancefloor. He could feel the eyes on him immediately; it was enough that he wasn’t partnered, but here he was dancing with the photographer of all people. Brian tried not to let it affect him as Freddie wrapped his arms around him.
Brian’s bump settled against Freddie’s flat stomach like it belonged there, the baby kicking happily to the music. A flat foot pressed through Brian’s abdomen, and Freddie felt it against him.
“Ooh, someone else likes dancing,” he said sweetly as he swayed along to the music with Brian in his arms.
Brian flushed. “I’m sorry,” he said. “It’s hard not being in control of your own body.”
Freddie tutted. “There’s nothing to apologize for, darling. Nothing sweeter than the miracle of life.”
Freddie’s hands moved from Brian’s shoulders down to his waist, squeezing a little. His hands were warm, and held Brian like a precious thing.
“So,” he began, “I don’t mean to pry, but you came here alone. Where is Mr. May?”
Brian laughed bitterly. “There is no Mr. May. There never was. It’s just me and the little one.”
Freddie nodded quietly before pulling him closer, the baby between them.
“Are you excited?”
Brian grunted. “I’m scared to death.”
The music swirled between them, and the baby fluttered.
Freddie squeezed Brian a little tighter.
“You’re going to do fine.”
Brian sniffed, tears pooling in his eyes. “How do you know?”
Freddie hesitated. “I…don’t. But, I would like to. Know, that is. If you would let me.”
Brian withdrew, tears spilling down his face. “Why?”
Freddie wiped them away with his thumb, his fingers smooth against Brian’s face. “I want to get to know you better,” he said. “You and the baby.”
Brian just blinked at him, not understanding.
Freddie laughed. “I like you dummy. Do I have to spelling it out for you?”

“You see here where you describe your methodology Brian? If you’re not clear on your informed consent, it could cause legal problems down the road.”
Miami traced the Sampling Frame section of Brian’s research assignment with an elegant finger, enunciating every word smoothly and assuredly with an almost calm sort of distinction.
Brian blinked, trying to comprehend what he was saying, and ran a hand through his curls in frustration.
He ended up huffing out a breath followed by a small sound of defeat.
“I just don’t understand why I have to do this, Miami…my study is quantitative, not qualitative.” He knew he was whining. He didn’t really care.
Miami put a sympathetic hand on his arm. “But this assignment is qualitative, Brian,” Miami said softly. “And you’ve got to get through this if you want to do the study you want to do.”
Soft eyes sought out Brian’s, waiting for a reply. Brian pursed his lips. “Yeah, you’re right.” Brian worried his bottom lip. “Thank you for helping me. I’m truly terrible at qualitative research and this is due tomorrow.”
Miami just smiled, his eyes lighting a bit. “It’s no problem Brian. Lucky for you I suffered through my own qualitative hell, and I’m happy to help.”
“How’s our two scholars doing,” Freddie said as he came up behind them with two mugs of tea. He put them down, and Miami smiled up at Freddie gratefully while Brian grabbed Freddie’s hand, brought it to his lips and kissed it. Miami looked away awkwardly at the sweet display of affection.
Freddie let his fingers trail along Brian’s face. “The boys are preparing a surprise for you love. “You’ve been working too hard.”
Brian sighed into his touch, thinking a break would be good, but felt compelled to look to Miami for some sort of approval.
The man only smiled softly. “Go on Brian. I think you’ve earned it. We’ve been at it for a while now.”
Brian kissed Freddie gently, letting his hand trail from his face down his side. The excitement of finally being done with his studies for the evening was starting to lift his mood.
John and Roger emerged from the bathroom, red-faced and hands steeped in bubbles. “All done my love,” John said eagerly. “Just waiting for you to get naked,” Roger said with a wink, his cherubic face conforming instantly into that of a naughty nymph as he linked hands with John, their conjoined hands dripping onto the carpet.
“And for you, Miami."
The man was about to make his apologies; it was getting late and this was the perfect time to slip out, of course, as his role here was done, and then John had said that.
His face must’ve betrayed his surprise, because he had no more spoken than Freddie had lightly touched his hand.
“Yes, darling you must stay! You’ve worked just as hard as Bri, and we have an enormous tub! It’s why we chose the flat, he said with a cheeky grin. Have a soak and a glass of wine with us. We won’t bite.”
Miami’s heart was slamming in his chest, and the careful composure he usually wore like one of his three piece suits began raveling at the edges. He took a shuddery breath. “Perhaps I could just put my feet in,” he found himself saying.
The boys laughed, even Brian, and his face bled crimson. Freddie, John, and Roger led him and Brian to the bathroom, making a show of easing the door open.
There were candles everywhere, and soft music played from an unknown source. The tub was filled to overflowing with bubbles, and a trail of rose petals led to the edge of it, culminating in a few petals sprinkled on top. Assorted oils and soaps were lined up on the side of the tub, and the smell of lavender wafted up from the hot bubbles, settling in the thick air.
“Ooh,” Brian said, his eyes sparkling in the candlelit bathroom. He turned to face the three boys. “This is so beautiful guys. I can’t believe you did all of this for me.”
Freddie smiled. “Well we did, so get over it. Freddie turned his attention to Miami. “And we want you to enjoy it to, mister. So slip off those shoes, yeah?”
The boys scurried out, laughing and giggling and giving each other knowing smiles. Their high mood was almost infectious, and Miami smiled after them as he watched them go.
But then he was left alone with Brian.
Brian began undressing, and Miami immediately shuffled back until he was pressed against the vanity. He busied himself with the laces on his loafers, taking his time so he wouldn’t concentrate on the pieces of clothing that steadily dropped on the bathroom floor, fluttering the trail of rose petals as they fell.
He slipped off his shoes, then his socks, and then he rolled up his trousers to the knee, hearing Brian finally slip into the water, hissing and sighing at the heat. For the first time, he let himself look up.
Brian was beautiful. The end of his curls were soaked in bubbles, and he had a soft blush to his dewy skin. He was submerged to the chest in the water, and while Miami couldn’t see his nudity, just knowing he was compromised in such an intimate way made something pull and tug in his gut. He swallowed heavily.
Brian smiled at him, his eyes hooded as he reclined in the tub. “Come on in,” he said. “Feels amazing.”
Miami laughed shyly, stepping into the water with one foot and then the other and then easing down to sit on the edge of the tub. He let his fingers skim the surface of the water, playing with the bubbles, and sighed.
“You’re right; it’s lovely.”
“Even better down here,” Brian said, his voice low. “Come on Miami. You’ve got to be getting warm in that suit.”
Indeed, he had started to sweat in the steamy bathroom, beads of perspiration gathering along his pristine white collar. He reached up to loosen his tie.
Miami cleared his throat, trying to change the subject.
“Are you still nervous about your assignment?”
Brian hummed. “No. You’ve helped me.” He locked eyes with Miami for a moment, his hazel eyes soft. “I don’t know what I would’ve done without you.”
Miami blushed, and not just from the heat of the bathroom. “Don’t mention it Brian. I’m happy to help.”
Brian quirked his mouth, reaching a slender leg out of the tub and flicking water and bubbles in Miami’s direction with his foot. Some landed on his trousers. “You can call me Bri, you know.”
Miami put his hand to the newly damp spots. “Bri,” he said, trying it out. He looked at the appealing young man lounging in the tub of bubbles. “Ok.”
Brian flashed his eyes up at him. “Won’t you come in?”
He wanted to. God, he wanted to. But—
Why don’t you?
Miami wet his lips, considering only for a moment before he stood, getting out of the tub. He stepped behind the screen that separated the toilet from the bath and disrobed, his hands shaking against his sides.
“Um, Bri?
“Yes Miami?”
“Don’t look.”
Brian chewed the inside of his jaw. “You’re joking.”
Miami pursed his lips. “No, I’m not. Just…don’t look, ok?”
Brian did as he asked, closing his eyes dutifully until he felt the water slosh and heard the man sink below the bubbles. He looked up to find Miami flushed and settled in the tub, tan skin with a light smattering of chest hair just meeting the water line.
Brian smiled, stretching out his legs alongside Miami’s, seeking some sort of contact with the man. He startled, but soon relaxed into his touch. His skin was smooth and warm from the water.
“See?” Brian said, a broad smile on his face. “Isn’t this nice?”
Miami couldn’t help but return it, even though he was blushing hard. “It is very nice.”
“The boys are so good to me,” Brian said, sighing back against the tub.
Miami hummed. “You’re lucky to have them. And I’m lucky to represent you all.”
Brian laughed. “Even through all the headaches we must cause you?”
Miami just smiled, unconsciously seeking Brian’s hand in the water. He gave it a little squeeze. “The benefits far outweigh the risks.”
Brian nodded. “Is this the first time you’ve ever taken a bath with a client?” he said with a cheeky grin.
Miami looked him seriously. “It’s the first time I’ve ever taken a bath with a friend.”
Brian leaned forward, his legs intertwining with Miami’s. Miami didn’t seem to mind the touch; in fact, he relaxed into it.
“You need more baths or more friends,” Brian said gently.
Miami chuckled softly, their faces growing nearer. Brian smoothed his hand over the firm flesh of his arm, arriving at his neck to cup and hold him there. Miami just looked at him a little starry-eyed.
“More baths would be nice,” he said a little breathlessly, and Brian pressed his lips to his in a soft, sweet kiss, awkward at first as they figured out where to put their mouths, just testing the waters, and then gentle and exploring as they hesitantly tasted each other.
Just then, the door opened, and while Miami broke away, Brian still had his arms casually draped over his shoulders.
“Oh boys, just look at them! Our two little professors! Aren’t they cute?!” Freddie exclaimed. Roger and John shared a quick kiss, John’s arm slung around Roger’s waist.
“You two look hot as fuck,” Roger said, his eyes twinkling. “Can we join the party? Or do we wanna take it somewhere else?”
Brian wiggled his fingers. “I’m all pruney,” he said with a laugh. “What about you Miami? Want to get out, maybe have a glass of wine?”
Miami swallowed, Brian’s kiss still tingling on his lips.
“Yeah,” he said. “That would be good.”
---
Miami clutched is wine glass in a sweaty palm, nervously fingering the stem. His eyes were large as he watched the four men in front of him in varying states of undress enjoying each other on the bed.
When their conversation had moved into the bedroom, they had still insisted he stay. Brian was spread out wide, head in Freddie’s lap, while Roger’s mouth took care of him and John opened him up. There was a look of pure bliss on Brian’s face that only tightened his trousers.
Miami’s fingers trembled slightly on the wine glass as he took another burning sip. It was a heavy red that settled in his stomach like lead.
Roger pulled off Brian’s cock long enough to smile at Miami, his cheeks red and lips shiny with spit. “What’s your professional opinion, Miami? How many fingers can he take before he comes like this?”
Miami swallowed hard, his hands trembling. “Three,” he stammered out, and Brian moaned, Freddie soothing his hair.
John was up to two already, and he glanced over his shoulder at Miami. “Our lawyer either has too much faith in me or not enough in you Brimi,” he said in jest. “Let’s prove him wrong eh. “Let’s shoot for four.”
Brian whined, and Roger just went down on him even further, messily slurping at his cock and twirling his tongue around the head. The game became technique versus stamina and to see if they could prove Miami wrong.
Miami loosened a few buttons on his shirt, delicately pressing his thighs together to try and get some relief.
“You can touch yourself, darling,” Freddie said sweetly. “We won’t mind. He really is a lovely thing; I’m not sure how you couldn’t.”
Miami gnawed at his lip, his hand straying to his fly, then stopped, clenching his fingers into a fist. Sweat broke out on his forehead at his restraint.
“That’s three,” John announced, smiling over his shoulder at the seated man. “He should be coming undone anytime now Miami…but he won’t. He’s taking that fourth.”
Brian whimpered, his legs writhing against the sheets. “Please John,” he begged. “Need your cock.”
John tsked. “Not yet my love. “Not until you’re good and stretched. And no arguing. We’ve got a bet going with Miami.”
Brian blinked through the haze. “Miami? He’s here? Thought he left.”
John chuckled, Roger picking up the pace, his jaw beginning to ache. Brian’s breath hitched at the onslaught. “Want him. Want Miami.”
John’s eyebrows raised. “Do you now? How do you want him love?”
Brian closed his eyes. “Want him to touch me.”
Miami could scarcely believe what he was hearing, but he could believe it even less when he walked to the edge of the bed when John called him over to where he was and he was looking down at Brian, creamy thighs open and beautiful…slick hole stuffed full of John’s fingers.
“Give me your hand,” John said in a tone that bade no argument. He poured some lube into it and told him to warm it up. Then he told him to place a finger alongside his.
He was almost afraid to hurt him, but when Brian pushed against him, he easily slipped into his wet heat, something like wonder filling his eyes.
It felt so impossibly good…hot and tight, and the way Brian fluttered around them made his breath hitch.
John looked at him fondly. “Guess I won the bet,” he said. “What did we even wager again?”
Miami laughed, feeling Brian tighten around him. He was moaning, and his whole body was arching into Roger. He grabbed a handful of blond hair. “Rog,” he gasped out before he came in the blond’s mouth, contracting powerfully around their fingers.
Freddie passed them a towel and Miami stepped away from the bed. His face was burning, but his eyes were also alight with fondness. Freddie and Roger were kissing Brian. “You ready to come again, my love? Ready for the main event?”
Miami decided it was time to make his leave, so without saying a word he slipped out of the bedroom. Besides, if he stayed any longer, he would have to take care of himself, and that really wasn’t something he was ready to do in front of them. Not yet, anyway.
---
The next business meeting went on without any awkwardness. Miami couldn’t decide if he was relieved or disappointed, but the boys seemed to have forgotten the entire evening had even happened. Maybe it was for the best.
They were all leaving, when Brian turned to him and smiled. “I made an A on my research paper.”
Miami couldn’t suppress a grin. “That’s lovely. Well you did most of the work yourself.”
Brian grimaced. “That’s bullocks. Couldn’t have done it without you.” He paused. “Are you…coming over for tutoring later? I have another assignment and could really use the help.”
Miami looked surprised. “Oh, sure Brian. I would be glad to help.”
“It’s Bri, remember?”
Miami studied his shoes briefly. “Yes I do. Bri.”
Brian was halfway out the door. “Oh and Miami? This time, don't leave.”

Freddie laid on the horn. Having been the first one in the van all dressed and ready, he expected the others to be just as prepared and excited to go to the pumpkin patch as he was.
He beeped the horn again, this time with a little more enthusiasm.
“Come on, darlings! We’re going to be late!”
Brian stuck his head out of the flat, still buttoning his shirt. “The bloody thing doesn’t close until five, Freddie. What are you going on for about being late?”
“To get the choice of the best pumpkins, of course! All the good ones will go early,” he whined.
Brian cursed under his breath, then muttered, “we’ll be down in a minute.”
When they finally piled into the van, Freddie’s excitement was nearly infectious. “I’ve read all about it,” he turned to the other two as Brian drove. “There’s going to be cider and an old country store and even a hayride!”
Roger turned a bit, staring out of the window in his dark glasses. He’d had to rush his hair routine, and he was quite cross. “What the fuck is a hayride?”
Freddie stopped for a moment. “I’m…not quite sure,” he said. “But it sounds delightful.”
John frowned. “Well I’m not mounting a bale of hay. For you or for anyone, love.”
Freddie’s face fell. “I’m sure that’s not what it means…”
Brian sighed. “Let’s all just have a good Saturday, ok boys? And pick out a nice pumpkin.”
Freddie found his fire again. “Oh, we’re going to pick out the most perfect one, Brian. Flawless…not a spot on it. Round and plump and just the right shade of orange. God, I can’t wait!”
Roger groaned. “I don’t understand why we have to go all the way out here just to get a pumpkin. Why can’t we just go to the bloody market? They’ve got them on sale for Christ’s sake.”
Freddie turned around so he could look at where Roger sat pouting in the backseat. “It’s because it’s fall,” he explained like he didn’t know. “And this is where the pumpkins are born, Roggie. We get to pick them out ourselves, straight from the patch. It’s much more exciting that way.”
Roger rolled his eyes, but Freddie couldn’t see it. “I guess.”
John reached over and linked hands with Roger, who managed a small smile. “Just try for him,” John whispered when Freddie had turned back around. “He’s so excited.”
Roger sighed. “I know. But I’m not mounting a bale of hay, either.”
---
It was, Brian had to admit, rather beautiful. The farm was decorated in opulent décor, deep burgundy and yellow flowers adorning the perimeter of a split-rail fence where beautiful sparkly orange and gold ribbons were strung among the posts. The grounds were impeccably kept; there were strategically placed wheelbarrows spilling over with fruits and nuts, others with flowers, and swings for adults and kids alike hanging from the tall oak trees.
It looked like a storybook.
Freddie’s eyes were large as he stepped out of the van. He looked around, eyes sparkling at the wonders around him, the scene pulled into tight focus by the clear sky and the crisp, lovely fall weather.
John kissed his cheek, breaking him from his spell. “Is it all you thought it would be sweetheart?”
Freddie nodded slowly, a gentle smile spreading on his face. “I hardly know what to do first.”
Roger slipped an arm around his waist. “Why don’t we start with tickets love? Unless you want to stand and look."
They went into the general store and purchased their tickets, giving them full access to the pumpkin patch grounds, the hayride (which they were still unsure about), and other features of the farm, and continued to walk around inside. It was just as beautifully decorated as the outside, looking like a rustic dream. They were selling jams and jellies and other homemade goodies, and Freddie wanted to buy everything he saw.
They finally pulled Freddie away from the wares inside the general store and they all stood rather unsure of what to do next. “Lead us Freddie. You’re sort of the expert here,” Brian said.
Freddie looked at the little map he’d picked up. “Let’s do the gem mining!” he said as he led them in that direction. They passed food vendors and picnic tables, the smells wafting from the trucks almost making them stop before lunch.
They arrived at the attraction, a small sluice with mud and rocks at the bottom. They were all given boxes so they could pan for precious gemstones, which they were told were actually among the silt.
About five minutes in, Brian found an amethyst. A moment later, Roger found a piece of crystal. He laughed. “This is rather fun,” he said with a smile.
John concurred. “I’ve found three stones so far. A ruby even. What about you Freddie?”
“Five, darling! I could do this all day.”
The other three smiled at each other, pleased to see him so happy. Indeed, they were all having fun, and not just for his sake.
They gave their stones a final rinse and decided it was time for lunch, so they wandered back to the picnic tables nestled among the food trucks to discuss their choices.
“I say we break off and sample a bit of everything,” John suggested. “There’s all kinds of things here that you wouldn’t normally get.” He paused. “Wait, where’s Roger?”
Roger suddenly appeared, his arms loaded with food. His eyes were bright beneath his shades. “I love this place!” he said as he set his wares on the table. “Look at this caramel apple. And this thing…they call it a funnel cake…it’s just fried dough dusted with sugar. And this,” he gestured to a little tray with a golden brown object that none of them could identify. “It’s a deep fried Oreo,” he said excitedly. “You know, the cookie? The mad chaps actually batter it and plunge it in hot grease! Amazing.”
Brian looked ill as Roger took a bite, his eyes fluttering closed in pleasure.
“I think I’ll have a salad,” he said.
---
“I’m ready to ride the hay.”
Everyone looked at John with a mixture of shock and amusement, seeing as they’d just had a full meal and he was the one who had expressed trepidation about the hayride in the first place.
Brian cocked an eyebrow. “Are you sure? The schedule says it leaves in three minutes. We would have to get in line now.”
John nodded. “If you all are.” His face went serious. “I want to do it.”
None of them knew what to expect, but when a large covered truck pulled up with hail bales on the back, it wasn’t that.
“Ok gents, climb aboard!” the driver said.
They all looked at each other and shrugged as they settled themselves on the square hay bales, using them as seats on the back of the truck.
So this was a hayride.
The driver took them through beautiful fields of sunflowers, a tour guide riding with them explaining the history of the farm, how different crops grow as they passed them, and even various ghost stories as they passed through a particularly spooky part of the woods.
The boys cuddled up together using a blanket the tour guide provided and enjoyed the stories and scenery. With the warm press of his boyfriends around him and the crisp wind in his hair, John decided that he really liked hayrides.
Then, as the truck rounded a curve, Freddie could see them…varying shades of orange and green dotting a hillside. The truck shuttered to a stop and the boys climbed out, and Freddie knew the time had come to pick his pumpkin.
Brian came up behind him, resting his hands on his shoulders. “Well darling, what do you think?”
Freddie reached up, squeezing his hand. “They’re beautiful Bri,” he breathed. “I can hardly wait.”
“Go get one love,” John whispered as he came up beside him. “Go get the perfect pumpkin.”
Freddie ran off as the other three joined to watch him make his way between the pumpkin vines, soft smiles on their faces.
It wasn’t long before Freddie found it…round, plump, shiny, not a mark on it. Freddie had the pumpkin in his arms, walking back to the boys, when something caught his eye. It was sitting all by itself; all the other pumpkins around it had already been chosen. It was dirty and leaning to one side, the deformed bottom preventing it from sitting properly. It was more of a sherbet color than a true orange, but Freddie’s heart went out to it all the same. Gingerly, he set down the perfect pumpkin and picked up the newfound one.
“I got one!” he said as he made his way to the boys. Freddie was coming toward them, holding a pumpkin aloft proudly so they could see it.
Roger squinted down at the bulbous monstrosity in Freddie’s arms, his nose wrinkling. “Blimey,” he croaked. “Is that it?”
John elbowed him in the ribs, and he grunted.
“It’s really something,” Brian said thoughtfully.
“Good job Freddie. It’s uh…got a lot of character,” offered John.
Freddie beamed.
---
When the boys got back to their flat, Freddie sat their pumpkin on the table. Roger tossed his shades on the bar, sparing a glance at the little pumpkin.
“Cover it with something Freddie…that thing is looking at me.”
Freddie frowned. “Don’t be so cross. “You’re about to take the guts out.”
Roger whined. “Why me!?”
“You’ve got the smallest hands love,” Brian said, smiling. “And you know Freddie doesn’t like to get anything under his nails.”
Roger whimpered again, and John laughed. “Let me at least wipe it off for you love. And cut the top?” John sliced a neat circle in the top of the pumpkin while Roger found a large spoon and a bowl. Meanwhile, Freddie was looking for a candle for the pumpkin.
John popped the stem off the top of the pumpkin and looked inside. “Eww,” he said, making a face. “It’s all yours Rog.”
Roger peered down into the pumpkin and grimaced. “Freddie, I must really love you.”
He plunged the spoon down inside and scooped out the seeds. He looked up, blond hair falling in his face. “It’s not all coming out.”
Freddie waved his hand in encouragement. “Put your hand in there sweetheart. Pull it out with your fingers.”
Roger looked at Freddie murderously as he plunged his hand into the pumpkin.
“Oh God, it feels like lube!”
John began laughing. “Since when have you ever minded a little lube on your fingers?”
Roger rolled his yes. “Fuck off, John.”
John continued flipping through the magazine he was reading, a wry smile on his face.
Roger finished scooping the seeds until the inside was all cleaned. Brian walked by, examining what came out of the pumpkin.
“Need me to dispose of this love?”
Roger only nodded, wiping the sweat from his brow with the clean skin of his arm. He crossed to the sink to wash his hands, only to feel Freddie’s lips on his neck. “Guess who’s being taken care of tonight,” Freddie whispered, causing Roger to smile and lean into his touch.
“Who?” Roger asked coyly.
“Mmm, you are,” Freddie replied, his hand going down to caress his bum. “But first I’ve got a pumpkin to carve.”
Roger laughed, shaking his head.
Freddie settled himself in front of the misshapen pumpkin, trying to get the proper angle. The boys gathered round him, trying to see what he saw.
“What about…here,” Brian said as he pointed to a particularly lump free spot on the pumpkin.
“Mmm, maybe,” Freddie said. “I thought I could put the eyes here.”
“Have you decided what kind of face? Happy, goofy, scary?” John asked.
Freddie smiled up at them from where he sat at the table. “Happy I think. I think this little pumpkin is happy to be home with us, don’t you?”
He made the first cut, and soon the face started to take shape.
They’d picked up a recipe for cider at the farm, and John started some on the stove. Soon, the rich aroma of spice and apples was filling the flat.
Roger sat a mug in front of Freddie. “It doesn’t look like the same pumpkin at all, love. How did you do that?”
“Simple,” he said as he beamed with pride. “I just showed it a little love.”
Brian smiled, dropping a kiss onto his head.
“Why did you pick this one darling?”
Freddie drummed his fingers on the table, smiling shyly up at them.
“It’s a misfit, just like us. And that makes it perfect.”
John joined them, his own mug of cider in his hand. “Indeed it does my love. Indeed it does.”
