Christopher Lee Rios, aka "Big Pun" died 16 years ago, today, on Feb. 7, 2000. The proud Boricua was the first Latino rapper to have an album be certified platinum, as a solo act. The same album, "Capital Punishment," earned him a Grammy nomination and made it to the #1 spot on the Hip-Hop/R&B charts. Pun formed the underground rap group called Full-A-Clips which included rappers Lyrical Assassin, Joker Jamz and Toom. He emerged from the underground hip hop scene in The Bronx borough of New York City, in the early 1990s, first appearing on tracks from Fat Joe's second album "Jealous One's Envy" in 1995.

The remixed version of song "Still Not a Player", featuring Joe became Big Pun's first major mainstream hit. He later joined Fat Joe's rap group, "The Terror Squad." His second album, Yeeeah Baby, completed after his death, was issued as scheduled in April 2000. It peaked at #3 on the Billboard charts and earned gold record status within three months of its release.
