Stranger on the Third Floor, 1940.
Stranger On The Third Floor (1940) If you desire some context, you can watch the film here (these scenes start at 35 minutes and 36 seconds in film and are part of a dream sequence that became a topic of debate as either groundbreaking or absurd and pretentious). If I recall, this film was considered the "first noir film" although it wasn't well received at the time (a review of the film in Variety in 1940 called it, "Too arty for average audiences.") Here's a quick read on the history of film noir from The Hollywood Reporter that won't take up too much of your time.
On December 3, 2010, the remastered version of Stranger on the Third Floor was released on DVD in the United States.
