Townhouse 237, located in the cushy Cotes ward. Temporary home of Dr. Neo Cortex. It’s been about five whole months since his arrival to this city. And as each day passes, he finds himself, not growing more irate. No, no. True as that may be, he’s found a level of intrigue in Spirale as a whole. Sure, the citizens were abhorrent and frustrating beyond belief here, but there were far more fascinating faces that he could easily brush the plebeians aside and focus on them. When the time arrived, after casing Facet Five and making off with it’s inventory, Enlisting N. Gin and Nina to help in this endeavor, creating the N.E.O. and re-constructing his brand new Cortex Vortex Redux, he would surely have control over this pathetic island!! He just needed time and patience. What else was he going to do after all?
“Hah! And with that everything is set!” Taking a small step off the ladder he was positioned on, Cortex couldn’t help but grin devilishly at his work. With the entirety of Townhouse 237 devoid of any more roommates, our madman took it upon himself to install a covert surveillance system in it’s walls. Eyes cast at the small framed photo on the wall, not of himself, but some seaside scenery, he puffs out his chest in pride. It would take a good eye to spot the camera lens in that puny photo, let alone any of the other hidden cameras the house was now littered with. Feeling all too accomplished, Cortex hops on the sofa seat and surveys the entirety of the living room. “No more Droid with Daddy issues, no more Squirrel Beastkin to give me an earful... I won’t deny I cherished her company far more that Darrell’s...” He lays down, treating the sofa like a bed now, laying flat on it’s cushions. “...But in the end they’re all just nosy noisemakers... Wasn’t there a blue gent?” A small shrug and he looks to his phone, ready to delight himself further by informing his niece of the news.
“Let’s see... Huh...” Odd. Nina’s contact wasn’t showing up in his favorites list. Just N. Gin. nose wrinkling, he passes it off as a small hiccup in the phones system and goes through the daunting task of searching the masterlist of contacts in search of her. “Nightmare Knight... Nine the Phantom... Nitocris...? Wait, wait...” Bolting up in his seat, he squints. “Nina should be right before this ‘Nine’ person. Where...?” He skims through again... and again... More frantic with each check. He double checks and triple checks. Where was Nina? Why wasn’t she listed?! “...Where is...? WHERE IS SHE?!” He’s now fully standing on the couch cushions, sweating. “Where is my beloved daught- ...Niece!?!” Not that anyone was in earshot, but he still felt the need to correct himself. Now he’s punching in her number manually, his breathing growing more labored while his fingers aggressively slam on the call button. A dial tone. It continues for a brief moment when finally it stops and he hears a voice. “NINA!!! You Scared me!!” Relief. What bliss. His brow furrows, but he still chuckles, just delighted to know she’s ok.
“Haha... Good one, pulling a fast one on your Uncle like tha-” But no. That’s not Nina’s voice. It was an automated message. The voice belonging to that Ofiuco person... It may not be her, but she tells him that the number he’s dialed is no longer available and that either the phone has been damaged or that the owner is no longer in the city. No longer in the city... The smile on his face remains, but he can feel his heart quite literally sink. Hair drooping now, he lets gravity take him and Cortex falls back on the sofa’s cushions. He listens to Ofiuco’s voice repeat herself that the number is no longer in service and chuckles. A small, light, bitter chuckle. Thumb swiping the screen, he hangs up the call. Look like another item to chalk up on his list of reasons for hating this place. ...They took one of the only people he actually cared for from him, sent her back home probably, but still!! Finally his expression falls flat and he emits a loud pained groan, pressing both of his hands to his eyes in an attempt to refrain from crying about this... He’s struggling to, but before he can even get that first whimper past his lips, a loud voice reverberates in his mind. “AH! ...RRRR!!! WHAT NOW?!”
The snide, obnoxious voice instructs him to look at the nearest screen, and while he’d rather huck his phone at the nearest wall, Cortex reluctantly obliges. His eyes, now somewhat teary are cast down at the phone in his hand, mouth twisted in a sneer. That ethereal feeling he experienced in that dream-like state washes over him again, but does he care? No. Not in the slightest...
Until K’horii describes the game in detail... Bodyswapping?! Cortex rolls his eyes and scoffs. He was not in the mood for this at all. “If it’s not one blasted thing in this detestable excuse of a city, it’s another!!” Claw tapping the pavement now, he snorts, the smoke escaping his nostrils and drifting upwards. “...Another. Anoooother. Ano- That’s not my voice in the slightest... It’s young and chipper... Gross. What is-” Was he on all fours? Was that smoke? Claws? “Hhh... Haaaahhh...” He sees his reflection in full once the screen shuts off. It’s that dragon!! Rather. HE’S that Dragon!!

“I’m... I’m that ludicrous purple dragon!!” He squeaks, spinning himself in a small circle once... twice... three times. He had to be sure he wasn’t seeing things!! This was unfathomable!! Out of the thousands of people in this city, and he got swapped with the small purple dragon!! “RRRR!!! First I lose Nina and now i’m being subjected to this?! To being treated like a child’s play thing?!” A Few small sparks fly past his lips in anger as he continues to ramble on about his current condition. “I am not some asinine toy you can swap, mix and match... WHATEVER!! I am Doctor-” No. He can’t even bring himself to finish that sentence. Hearing the young dragon’s voice spit out everything he felt and thought, it didn’t feel right. It didn’t SOUND right! Slamming a scaly fist on the concrete, the rest of his body follows suit and lays down.
“Alright... Alright... Keep a cool head, Cortex. You know this is the work of that jovial jester... Mad merrymaker or whatever. You just need to find yourself... Literally.” Now lets look on the positives! “Shouldn’t be too daunting of a task. This city is filled to the brim of idiots, neanderthals and peons. Seeing your glorious face among them all will not only be a welcome sight, but an easy enough find! Annnnd~” His new wings stretch out in pride. Well there was an attempt. He struggles to get them both fully spread for a moment. “Rrr.. Just... a little... Ah! There! Now I’ll finally get to look down on the rest of them!! Hehehehahahaaoohhh... that does not work with this voice...” Cortex makes a quick little pout, but gets back on all four again, trying his damn hardest to ignore how foreign this all felt.
Then something starts hovering around, flitting in his face. Something vibrant and yellow. “Ghhk! Wh-” Dragon arms flail around in an attempt to swat at whatever it was. Stopping the attempt to smack the bug, Cortex sees the little dragonfly, eyeing him with deep concern. Right. That dragon had a little bug pet didn’t he? “What? Worried about how your buddy is acting~?” They nod their head and in response and they’re given a scoff in return. “Look, Bug. I couldn’t care less. I just need to find a handsome devil of a scientist and I work better without your incessant buzzing in my ears!!” Using those wings again, he makes an attempt to smack the dragonfly away, to no avail. Instead it flies higher, away from him. “If you’re intent on following me, just stay out of my way. Lousy pest...” And he makes his way off to find the dragon who now donned his visage.

“ History’s so BORING. UGHHHH. ”
‘I’d rather focus on the now! That’s what’s important, isn’t it?’ Link nodded along in agreement. Sure, history could have some interesting stuff.... but it had already happened! So why dwell on stuff that’d already gone by? It didn’t seem like the thing to do.
“You could say that. I’ve had to defeat a lot of people who were hurting others, and sometimes you have to talk yourself into the fact you might have to kill them when left with no other choice.”
“Kill them! Oh! Are you a hero, then? But you are quite young. I do not doubt your capability or your resolve, but do you know of adults you can come to for help if such a thing happens here? I simply must ask. It is mandatory for most adults to become insufferable like this past the age of 25, unfortunately.” He props his chin on his hand sleepily. Not every dare to be challenged is aggressive. “We get a letter. It is all very official.”
In ordinary circumstances, he’s afraid of heroes. A conversation like this could send him into a quivering guilt spiral. Even now, he has no doubt that this young dragon wouldn’t have hesitated to try and kill him under the circumstances of his homeworld. But... a child? Somehow, it seems less likely that he’s dealing with a hardened and blood-hungry idealist, and more likely that they’ve both been used.
